The Civil War consisted of nearly 10,500 battles, engagements, and other military actions including nearly 50 major battles. But what is generally considered the last land battle of the Civil War. And give the day and month it started.

If I recall correctly, it was the Battle of Palmito Ranch, outside of Brownsville, TX, May 22-23 (or perhaps 23-24, I am not certain), 1865. Union troops (under the command of Seymour, methinks?) set out to confiscate and/or destroy a large cache of cotton, and Rebel troops (under the command of Rip Ford, me-also-thinks?) repulsed them after some seesaw fighting on each day. USCT's were a significant portion of the Union force. So, when all is said and done, the Union, the winners of the war, lost its last land battle. That is rather ironic, and I wonder how often it occurred in history that the winner of the war lost its last engagement.
Edit - Welcome to the trivia game, garytameling.
The battle started on May 12, so your answer of May 22-23 is not correct. However, you get a break, since I'm not counting the part of the question that asked for the date (see edit to final post on this thread), so you get full credit for a correct answer.
Hope you'll come back and play again.
