Laura J. Williams

Post Script: Although Laura J. Williams is the answer to this question, this is only one of the many names she used. She wrote a book in 1876 entitled "The Woman in Battle", under the name of Loreta Janeta Velazquez, based on her exploits and adventures in the Civil War. Among the alias' she used are Lt. Henry T. Buford, Mary Anne Keith, Lauretta Clarke Williams and Anne Williams. Her real name remains unknown. Renowned Civil War author W.C. Davis wrote an excellent article on this female con artist for History Net; you can read it at https://www.historynet.com/confederate-con-artist.htm.
