Edit - Correct, 39th MS. Rebel. Welcome to the trivia game and to CivilWarTalk.

If you haven't done so already, you're invited to stop by the New Recruits Meet & Greet forum and introduce yourself to some more CivilWarTalkers.

Hope you'll come back and play again.

The only person I could find who was both a brevet Major General and a U. S. Marshal was George Leonard Andrews, but he was a West Point graduate (first in his class, actually), so he would not have joined the Army as a private. I don't know anything about his wife or wives, anyway.

No answer for this one.

Edit - This is the second time we've had a question about a brevet Union general and I've gone through the great big long list of Union brevet generals at this site https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_American_Civil_War_brevet_generals_(Union)&oldid=870629664
and it has turned out that the correct answer was not included in that great big long list.

Coongratulations to all of you who found the correct answer to this question. Darned if I know how you did it.
