Early in the evening of the 13th, the enemy advanced in heavy column across open fields. Our Brigade was ordered forward. Our Regiment occupied a position a'top a hill in front of a house, and to the left of a battery of the Washington Artillery. Under heavy fire from enemy artillery and infantry, our Regiment was continuously engaged for over 5 hours and used over 35,000 cartridges. As fast as one column of the enemy was repulsed, another would form and renew the assault. When night brought an end to the conflict, the field to our front told the story of the desperation with which the assault was made. Our regiment lost, in killed and wounded, 274 men out of 563.
What battle is described AND what Regiment are we?

1st Battle of Fredericksburg
and an unlucky Confederate regiment

Edit - Unlucky for sure, but you needed to identify them more specifically.

Fredericksburg

48th North Carolina
but only because they had the largest Fredericksburg losses of the other regiments shown on this map although it's not 274. I must have got this all wrong!

PLEASE CHANGE MY ANSWER (sorry)

Still Fredericksburg but the regiment is the 15th NC . . .

. . . although Fox pegs the 15th NC loss at Fredericksburg as 103, not 274. But maybe Fox isn't correct:

But for John Williamson Stockard, the war goes on. At Marye’s Heights above Fredericksburg, the 15th stays in action for five hours, expending 35,000 cartridges.

Battle of Fredericksburg (Marye's Heights), Dec. 13th, 1862.

15th North Carolina regiment

"In the autumn of 1862 MacRae and the Fifteenth North Carolina were transferred to the all–North Carolina brigade of General John R. Cooke and on 13 December participated in the Battle of Fredericksburg. Stationed on Marye's Heights, the Fifteenth North Carolina suffered a terrible loss of 274 out of 563 men killed and wounded."

Battle: Fredericksburg (guessed from date and battle description)

I cannot find any maps that inlude both individual regiments plus the artillery batteries, nor do they show the location of the house (on Willis Hill). :banghead: Cobb's Georgia Legion, reinforced by some North Carolina regiments, is as close as I can get. Can I get half credit for getting the battle? :D

Edit - Since the question asked for the name of the battle and the name of the regiment, then, unfortunately, no half credit can be given. You had to get both parts of the answer correct.
