:laugh: I suppose it's called a baby waker because the sudden thunder would wake sleeping babies.

A baby waker is the first shot of an artillery cannonade.

In addition, it seems, some units also named one of their cannons "Baby Waker".

Edit - The term refers specifically to the first shot, not the entire cannonade. I guess the idea was that the first shot would be the one that would wake a sleeping baby. The baby would already be awake when all subsequent shots were fired.
