John Hunt Morgan, known as the Thunderbolt of the Confederacy, brought his own "Lightning" along with him on his raids, in the person of a telegrapher who was skilled at imitating Union telegraphers and sending messages giving inaccurate information about the size of Morgan's forces and the direction where they were headed. What was the name of this Canadian-born telegrapher?

George A. "Lightning" Ellsworth
The Burning of Atlanta scene was shot long before filming started on Gone with the Wind and indeed before either of the actors were cast in the role of Rhett and Scarlet. The purpose of this was to clear the lot so the sets for the movie could be built. The buildings being burnt were sets from other films, the most noticeable being the huge gates featured in the original King Kong movie. The two actors in this scene were simply stunt doubles who doubled for Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable.

bonus- The first scene to be shot was the burning of the Atlanta Depot, filmed on 10 December 1938. If there was a major mistake during the filming, the entire film might have been scrapped. They actually burned many old sets that needed to be cleared from the studio back lot, including ones from The Garden of Allah (1936) and the "Great Wall" set from King Kong (1933). The fire cost over $25,000 and yielded 113 minutes of footage. It was so intense that Culver City residents jammed the telephones lines, thinking MGM was burning down. They burned the set of King Kong. Movie - GoneWith The Wind.

He was George Ellsworth. Aka "Lightning Ellsworth". His "fake news" from the telegraph was highly innovative.

Bonus.

During the filming of Gone with the Wind, studio sets including one from the movie King Kong were burned simulating the Burning of Atlanta. More below.

One, the burning of Atlanta, was the first thing shot. Selznick knew it would be the most expensive scene ($25,000 at the time) to film and that if something went wrong the movie might have to be scrapped completely. Using stunt doubles for Gable and the as yet uncast Scarlett, they burned the studio's back lot, including some old sets from other movies like King Kong. The blaze was so big that frantic locals called the fire department. The director shot 113 minutes of footage for what would ultimately be a relatively short scene. According to legend, while filming the fire Selznick's brother, who was an agent, came to the set and introduced him to Vivien Leigh, saying, "David, meet your Scarlett O'Hara."

Scarlett was stunt-doubled by Aline Goodwin and Lila Finn, while Rhett was doubled by veteran stuntmen Yakima Canutt and Jay Wilsey.
That's what IMDB says anyway....

Apparently they burned several sets and once the ashes cooled off they built Tara on top. But that consisted of a set of stairs borrowed from another movie and just one room. The rest was all the magic of electrickery.
