August 1, 1854 - City of Lawrence, Kansas is founded.
August 1, 1856 - Preston S. Brooks is elected to Congress to fill the vacancy he created by resigning.
August 1, 1857 - Utah organizes its militia, the Nauvoo Legion.
August 1, 1861 - Tennessee votes to adopt the Constitution of the Confederate States of America.
August 1, 1861 - Arnold Elzey, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.
August 1, 1861 - Lawrence Pike Graham, USA, is appointed Brig. Gen.
August 1, 1861 - Police Commissioner Charles Howard addresses US War Secretary, Simon Cameron, and Bvt. Lieut. General Winfield Scott, protesting against the alleged harsh treatment of the political prisoners at Fort Lafayette, MD.
August 1, 1861 - Skirmish at Edina, MO.
August 1, 1861 - After his capture of Fort Fillmore, New Mexico Territory, on Jul 26, Capt. John Baylor, CSA, declares that all the territory in New Mexico and Arizona south of the 34th parallel, belongs to the Confederacy.
August 1, 1861 - Gen. Robert Edward Lee, CSA, is ordered to take command of the Confederate forces in West Virginia, by order of President Jefferson Davis, following Jul 13 at Carrick's Ford, WV; Lee replaces Brig. Gen. William W. Loring.

August 1, 1863 - Brig. Gen. John Wynn Davidson's, USA, Cavalry Division moves from Wittsburg to Clarendon, AR. (Aug 1-8)

August 1, 1863 - Skirmish at Smith's Shoals, Cumberland River, KY, as Col. John S. Scott, CSA, crosses back into Tennessee after capturing weapons, supplies, and destroying bridges.

August 1, 1864 - Federal scout against Indians on the Smoky Hill Fork, KS. From present indications, the Yankees believe the Indians are upon the Saline, Solomon, and Republican Rivers, as the buffalo are plenty upon these streams, and they depend entirely upon them for a living. (Aug 1-5)
