  • General Robert E. Lee arrived in western Virginia on an uncertain mission.
  • John R. Baylor proclaimed all of New Mexico in the name of Confederacy.
  • President Jefferson Davis wrote General Johnston on military matters.
  • U.S. Senate debated a bill to suppress insurrection and sedition.
  • President Abraham Lincoln appointed Gustavus V. Fox as Assistant Secretary of Navy.
Friday, August 1, 1862
  • Skirmishing took place at Ozark, Grand River, and Carrollton, Missouri. Also taking place at Barnett’s Ford, Virginia.
  • President Jefferson Davis wrote General Robert E. Lee protesting against alleged atrocities to civilians and soldiers and the arming of slaves by Federal authorities.
  • United States Official in South Carolina announced the issuance of papers indicating their freedom to Negro Soldiers not enlisted.
Saturday, August 1, 1863
  • Cavalry fighting took place in Brandy Station, Virginia.
  • In Kentucky, there was a small expedition by the North from Columbus to Hickman, and a skirmish at Smith’s Shoals.
  • In Charleston Harbor, federals began the build-up for an attack on Battery Wagner, and Fort Sumter.
  • U.S. War Department disbanded the Fourth and Seventh Army Corps.
  • USN Admiral David D. Porter assumed naval command on the Mississippi River. Porter encouraged legal river trade.
Monday, August 1, 1864
  • Today marks the anniversary of the Battle of Folck’s Mill. This battle is also known as the Battle of Cumberland. The battle took place in Allegany County Maryland. The result of the battle was inconclusive. Confederate Commander was Brig. General John McCausland commanding two brigades. Confederate Army casualties were 20 – 25 killed and 40 – 50 wounded. Union Army Commander was Brig. General Benjamin F. Kelley commanding a force of three regiments. Union Army casualties and losses were 2 killed and 3 wounded.
  • There was an affair at Flintstone Creek near Cumberland
  • Major General Philip Sheridan was named Commander of the Union Army of the Shenandoah, with a special task of ridding the Valley of Lt. Gen. Jubal Early and all Confederates.
  • Siege Continued in the Richmond – Petersburg, Virginia area.
  • Skirmishing occurred at Deep Bottom, Virginia.
  • Maj. General William T. Sherman’s guns shelled Atlanta, Georgia.

August 1, 1861 - Police Commissioner Charles Howard addresses US War Secretary, Simon Cameron, and Bvt. Lieut. General Winfield Scott, protesting against the alleged harsh treatment of the political prisoners at Fort Lafayette, MD.

August 1, 1861 - Skirmish at Edina, MO.

August 1, 1861 - After his capture of Fort Fillmore, New Mexico Territory, on Jul 26, Capt. John Baylor, CSA, declares that all the territory in New Mexico and Arizona south of the 34th parallel, belongs to the Confederacy.

August 1, 1861 - Gen. Robert Edward Lee, CSA, is ordered to take command of the Confederate forces in West Virginia, by order of President Jefferson Davis, following Jul 13 at Carrick's Ford, WV; Lee replaces Brig. Gen. William W. Loring.

August 1, 1864 - Federal scout to Baxter Springs, KS, with skirmish, where after a few shots, the Confederates are routed.

One of these days,I will get into some reading about CW Missouri and take a trip there. It was a rough place to be in the War. I've never been to Missouri.

Battle of Folck's Mill:
Today marks the 158th​ anniversary of the Battle of Folck's Mill. This battle is also called the Battle of Cumberland. The battle was part of Early's raid and operations against the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The battle was fought on August 1, 1864. Location of the battle was Alleghany County, Maryland.
