June 29, 1857 - President James Buchanan responds to Brigham Young chasing federal judges William Drummond, George Stiles and John Kinney from the territory of Utah by ordering William Harney to advance to Utah and protect the new territorial governor and judges.

June 29, 1862 - The capture of the British steamer, Ann, a blockade runner, under the guns of Fort Morgan, AL.

June 29, 1862 - The Confederate Dept. of Alabama, and West Florida is discontinued.

June 29, 1862 - Federal reconnaissance from Front Royal to Luray, VA, and skirmish. (Jun 29-30)

June 29, 1862 - Skirmish on the James River Road, near Willis' Church, VA.

June 29, 1862 - Skirmish at Jordan's Ford, VA.

June 29, 1862 - The Battle of Savage Station, on the Richmond and York River Railroad, VA. Day 5 of the 7 days battles.

June 29, 1862 - Brig. Gen. Richard Griffith, C.S.A., is mortally wounded at the Battle of Savage Station, and is transported to and dies in Richmond, VA.

June 29, 1862 - The Engagement at Peach Orchard, or Allen's Farm, near Fair Oaks Station, VA, as Gen. Robert E. Lee, CSA, continues to press on against the retreating Army of the Potomac.

June 29, 1864 - Skirmishes at Charlestown and Duffield's Station, WV, as Lieut. Col. John S. Mosby, CSA, captures 25, destroys a storehouse and telegraph wires, escaping across the Shenandoah Valley into Loudoun County by Berry's Ferry.

June 29, 1865 - Skirmish with Indians near Fort Dodge, Kansas, as a party of about 40 Indians charged upon one of the cattle herds belonging to a Mexican train, killing 2 Mexican herdsmen; the Indians fail to capture any livestock as the soldiers are fast on their trail in chasing them away.

  • Special Cabinet meeting with Leading Generals in attendance occurred in Washington D.C. at this meeting General Irvin McDowell outlined his plans for attacking the Confederates.

  • Today marks the 159th​ Anniversary of the Battle of Savage’s Station Virginia. This battle was part of the Virginia Peninsula Campaign. The battle was fought in Henrico County Virginia. The result of the battle can be looked as inconclusive. Confederate Army Commander was Brig. General John B. Magruder commanding a force of 14,000. Confederate Army casualties and losses were 473. Union Army Commander was Major General Edwin V. Sumner commanding a force of 26,600. Union Army casualties and losses were 1,038.
  • Fighting took place at Moorefield in Western Virginia.
  • Skirmishing at James River Road near Willis Church
  • Fighting took place at Peach Orchard or Allen’s Farm near Fair Oaks.
  • June 29, 1863 (This Day fell on a Monday):
  • Today marks the start of the 158th​ Anniversary of Battle of Goodrich’s Landing Louisiana. This battle was part of the Vicksburg Mississippi Campaign. The battle was fought in East Carroll Parish Louisiana. The battle had a result of inconclusive. Confederate Army Commander was Colonel William H. Parsons commanding. Union Army Commander was Brig. General Alfred W. Ellet commanding. Union Army Casualties and losses were 120.
  • Major General Meade moved the Army of the Potomac rapidly forward in Maryland and by evening had his left at Emmitsburg and his right at New Windsor. John Buford’s Cavalry had his advance at Gettysburg. Kilpatrick’s Cavalry had contacted Stuart’s Confederates on the right flank of the of the Federals. Stuart now far north of the Potomac was ranging far and wide.
  • Both armies are heading in the General Direction of Gettysburg.
  • Skirmishing occurred at McConnellsburg Pennsylvania
  • Skirmishing occurred at Westminster Maryland

  • June 29, 1864 (This Day fell on a Wednesday):
  • Today marks the Anniversary of the First Battle of Ream’s Station Virginia. This battle was part of the Richmond – Petersburg Campaign. The battle was fought in Dinwiddie County Virginia. The result was a Confederate Victory. Confederate Army Commanders were Major General William Mahone and Brig. General Fitzhugh Lee commanding a force of 7,000. Union Army Commanders were Brig. General James H. Wilson and Brig. General August V. Kautz commanding a force of 4,000. All together this battle produced casualties and losses of 600.
  • President Davis told Georgia Governor Joseph Brown that he had sent Johnston “all available reinforcements, detaching troops even from points that remain exposed to the enemy”
