June 28, 1862 - Skirmishes at and near Blackland, MS, as Confederate Cavalry attack Brig. Gen. William S. Rosecrans', USA, cavalry pickets here.

June 28, 1862 - The Federal naval bombardment of Vicksburg, MS, and the passage of the batteries by the Union fleet under Admiral Daniel Farragut, USN.

June 28, 1862 - Operations in Johnson County, MO, with Federal orders to shoot every armed bushwhacker on the spot. (Jun 28-29)

June 28, 1862 - The Federal evacuation of James Island, SC, and a halt to the Union's attempt to capture Charleston, SC. (Jun 28-Jul 7)

June 28, 1862 - Skirmish at Sparta, TN.

June 28, 1862 - Confederate Department No. 2 is extended, TN.

June 28, 1863 - Colonel James Hardie travels to AoP headquarters and passes on Lincoln's and Halleck's order that George Meade assume command of the Army of the Potomac immediately, replacing Joe Hooker.

June 28, 1863 - Judson Kirkpatrick is appointed commander of the 3d Division of Cavalry Corps, Army of the Potomac.

June 28, 1863 - Skirmish at Russellville, KY, with Rebel guerrillas.

June 28, 1863 - Confederate attack on Donaldsonville, LA, by Brig. Gen. Thomas Hart Taylor, CSA.

June 28, 1863 - Skirmish between Offutt's Cross-Roads and Seneca, MD.

June 28, 1863 - Action near Rockville, MD. as Jeb Stuart's cavalry rides around the Army of the Potomac. At Rockville, they terrorized local Union sympathizers, captured a wagon train brimming with supplies on its way to the Union army, and charmed the young ladies of a female academy.

June 28, 1863 - Federal reconnaissance from Plymouth to Nichol's Mills, NC, who meet up with some Confederates in the dark; shots are fired with no loss of life.

June 28, 1865 - The District of Kansas is formed, from the Districts of North and South Kansas, and Brig. Gen. Robert B. Mitchell, is assigned to its command.

June 28, 1865 - On its final days of operation against Federal shipping, the Confederate commerce raider, the CSS Shenandoah captures 11 Union whalers in the Bering Sea.
