June 25, 1832 - Battle of Kellogg's Grove (Blackhawk War), Illinois.

June 25, 1834 - Roger B. Taney resigns as Secretary of the Treasury.

June 25, 1861 - Leonidas Polk, C.S.A., is appointed Maj. Gen.

June 25, 1861 - Mathias Point, VA, Potomac River, is attacked by Federal gunboats.

June 25, 1862 - Battle of Oak Grove - Battle of The Orchards - Joseph Hooker [US] tries to push forward to gain ground for better positioning of McClellan's siege guns at the gates of Richmond.

June 25, 1862 - July 1, 1862 - A series of closely linked battles known as The Seven Days Battle or The Seven Day Retreat start near Mechanicsville as the Army of the Potomac begins its advance to Richmond.

June 25, 1862 - Skirmish at Yellville, on the Little Red River, AR.

June 25, 1862 - Skirmish near Pensacola, FL.

June 25, 1862 - The Confederate Dept. No. 1 is merged into Dept. No. 2, under the command of General Braxton Bragg, CSA, MS.

June 25, 1862 - Affair near La Fayette Station, about a mile from Germantown, TN, as Confederate Cavalry derail and burn a train.

June 25, 1862 - The Army of Virginia, under the command of Maj. Gen. John Pope, USA, and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd US Army Corps of Virginia are constituted.

June 25, 1862 - President Lincoln returns to Washington, DC, from West Point, after visiting with retired Bvt. Lieut. Gen. Winfield Scott, USA.

June 25, 1863 - George Washington Custis Lee, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

June 25, 1863 - Walter Chiles Whitaker, USA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

June 25, 1863 - Skirmish at Milliken's Bend, LA.

June 25, 1863 - Federal expedition from Snyder's Bluff to Greenville, MS, aboard Union transports. (Jun 25-Jul 1)

June 25, 1863 - Skirmish near McConnellsburg, PA.

June 25, 1863 - The capture of the Federal main supply train by Maj. Gen. JEB Stuart's CSA Cavalry Corps, Gettysburg, PA, Campaign, as Stuart, in a costly move, becomes separated from the main body of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, unable to provide Gen. Robert E. Lee with much needed information as to the Federals' whereabouts.

June 25, 1863 - Skirmish at Fosterville, TN.

June 25, 1863 - Skirmish at Guy's Gap, TN.

June 25, 1863 - Union soldiers try to exploit an explosion under the Confederate entrenchments at the ongoing siege of Vicksburg. The Rebel line easily repulses the attack.

June 25, 1863 - The siege of Port Hudson is ongoing.

June 25, 1864 - Engineers begin digging a tunnel from Union lines under Confederate entrenchments at the ongoing siege of Petersburg.

June 25, 1864 - Edward Stuyvesant Bragg, USA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

June 25, 1864 - Confederate operations on the Yellow River, FL, where the Rebels capture two schooners, one being the Osceola.

June 25, 1864 - Skirmish at Allatoona, GA.

June 25, 1864 - Skirmish at Spring Place, GA.

June 25, 1864 - Skirmish at Morganfield, KY.

June 25, 1864 - Affair at Point Pleasant, LA.

June 25, 1864 - Skirmish at Ashwood, MS.

June 25, 1864 - Skirmish at Rancho Las Rinas, TX, as the Texas Rangers attack and rout the Yankees, killing about 20 men.

June 25, 1865 - Bvt. Brig. Gen. Chester Harding, Jr, 43rd Missouri Infantry, relinquishes his command of the District of Central Missouri.

June 25, 1866 - Connecticut approves the 14th Amendment

June 25, 1868 - Congress approves congressional representation for North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Louisiana over President Andrew Johnson's veto.

June 25, 1876 - Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and a detachment of 263 men are wiped out by 3,000 Sioux warriors under Chief Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse at Little Big Horn in the Montana Territory.

  • Today marks the anniversary of the Battle of Oak Grove Virginia. This battle also was known as Battle of French’s Field and Battle of King’s School House. This battle was part of the Virginia Peninsula Campaign. The battle took place in Henrico County Virginia. The result of the battle was inconclusive. The Confederate Commanders were General Robert E. Lee and Major General Benjamin Huger. The Confederate force was 1 division. Casualties and losses were 66 killed, 362 wounded and 13 missing. Union Army Commander was Major General George B. McClellan and Major General Samuel P. Heintzleman. The Union Army force had 3 brigade. Union Army casualties and losses were 68 killed, 503 wounded and 55 missing.
  • Skirmishing occurred at Yellville Arkansas
  • Skirmishing occurred at Mungo Flats in Western Virginia.
  • President Lincoln left West Point after his conference with General Winfield Scott.
  • The Union League was organized at Pekin Illinois

  • At 1:00 AM Major General JEB Stuart left from Salem Depot Virginia to join the Confederate army north of the Potomac after passing between the Federal Army and Washington D.C.

The result was a Confederate Victory. Confederate Army Commander was Major General W.H.F. “Rooney” Lee commanding a force of 4,100. Confederate casualties and losses were 10 killed and 24 wounded. Union Army Commander was Brigadier Generals James H. Wilson and August V. Kautz commanding a force of 5,000. Union Army casualties and losses were 42 killed, 44 wounded and 30 missing/captured.
  • Union Army Engineers started digging a tunnel at Petersburg Virginia for blowing apart the Confederate earthworks.
  • Skirmishing occurred in Georgia at Allatoona and Spring Place.

Today marks the anniversary of Staunton River Bridge. This battle was part of the Richmond – Petersburg Campaign. The battle took place in Halifax County and Charlotte County Virginia. The result was a Confederate Victory. Confederate Army Commander was Major General W.H.F. “Rooney” Lee commanding a force of 4,100. Confederate casualties and losses were 10 killed and 24 wounded. Union Army Commander was Brigadier Generals James H. Wilson and August V. Kautz commanding a force of 5,000. Union Army casualties and losses were 42 killed, 44 wounded and 30 missing/captured.
That's good stuff right there. Until some time in 2019, I'd never heard of that engagement. I was at a Round Table meeting and the speaker's topic was Petersburg. I don't recall who the speaker was. At some point in his presentation the Battle Of Staunton River Bridge and the State Battlefield Park was mentioned. I made as many notes as I could. I hope to visit it some day. It's my kinda place...off the beaten path. There are a lotta late war sites like that scattered across the South where makeshift Confederate forces engaged superior Union forces, sometimes successfully, sometimes not.
