July 16, 1862 - September 1, 1862 - Northern Virginia Campaign - sometimes just called the Virginia Campaign.

July 16, 1862 - "We are coming, Father Abraham, Three Hundred Thousand More" appears in the Saturday Evening Post. Written by James Sloan, the marching song was intended to help raise volunteers following Lincoln's request to Congress that it increase the size of the army to 500,000 men

July 16, 1862 - John Hunt Morgan wires Kirby Smith "Lexington and Frankfurt ... are garrisoned with Home Guard. The bridges between Cincinnati and Lexington (Kentucky) have been destroyed. The whole country can be secured and 25,000 to 30,000 men will join you at once."

June 16, 1862 - Federal scout from Batesville to Fairview, Denmark, Hilcher's Ferry, and Bush's Ford, AR. (Jun 16-17)

June 16, 1862 - The Emigrant Road expedition from Omaha, Nebraska Territory, to Portland, Oregon Territory. (Jun 16-Oct 30)

June 16, 1862 - The engagement at Secessionville, James Island, SC, results in Brig. Gen. Nathan G. Evans, CSA, repulsing Brig. Gen. Henry W. Benham, USA.

June 16, 1864 - Federal expedition from Kansas into Missouri, by order of Maj. Gen. Samuel R. Curtis, USA, commanding the Dept. of Kansas. (Jun 16-20)

June 16, 1864 - Federal expedition from Fort Leavenworth, KS, to Parley, et al, MO. (Jun 16-17)

June 16, 1864 - Maj. Gen. Joseph J. Reynolds, USA, is assigned to command of the forces being assembled at Morganza, LA, to operate against Mobile, AL.

June 16, 1864 - Affair on Big North Creek, near Preston, MO, with guerrillas.

June 16, 1864 - Action on the Bermuda Hundred, VA, front, as Gen. Pierre G.T. Beauregard, CSA, pulls his troops back to defend the Petersburg, VA, line, the Richmond, VA, Campaign.

June 16, 1864 - Skirmish at New London, VA, with Maj. Gen. Breckinridge, CSA, The Lynchburg, VA, Campaign.

June 16, 1864 - Skirmish on Otter Creek, near Liberty, VA, The Lynchburg, VA, Campaign.

June 16, 1864 - Skirmish at Spencer, WV.

July 16, 1866 - Congress overrides Andrew Johnson's veto of the Freedman's Bureau bill.
 
Today marks the 159th Anniversary of the Battle of Secessionville/First Battle of James Island South Carolina. This battle was part of June 1862 Operations against Charleston South Carolina. The battle was fought just outside of the main city of Charleston South Carolina. the result was a Confederate Victory. Confederate commanders were Brig. General Nathan G. "Shanks" Evans, Brig. General States Rights Gist and Colonel Thomas G. Lamar commanding a combined force of 2,000. Casualties and Losses were 204. Union Army Commander was Brig. General Henry Benham commanding a force of 6,600. Union Army Casualties and Losses were 685. I visited the battle site on Saturday the pictures you will see below are part of the battle site.

Thanks for that post and the reminder that much of the Atlanta campaign was an ongoing skirmish as the Rebs 'advanced' ever southward. In my novel, Whittled Away, about the 6th Texas in the AOT, I included Golgotha and the destruction of a little church to use the lumber for quickly built earthworks. My characters had only a fleeting moment of hesitation to use religious materials and furniture for their earthly protection from Yankee bullets.

The battle was part of the operations against Charleston South Carolina during June of 1862. The battle was fought on June 16, 1862. Location of the battle was Charleston, South Carolina.
