June 9, 1862 - Maj. Gen. John Ellis Wool, USA, assumes the command of the Middle Military Dept., VA.

June 9, 1863 - The Engagements at Brandy Station (or Fleetwood Hill) and Beverly Ford, VA, results in the largest Cavalry battle (about 20,000) during the Civil War; Maj. Gen. JEB Stuart, CSA, holds off Brig. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton, USA.

June 9, 1863 - Skirmish at Stevensburg, VA.

June 9, 1864 - Skirmishes near Big Shanty and near Stilesboro, GA, as Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, USA, prepares to attack Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, CSA, at Pine Mountain, GA.

June 9, 1864 - Action at Mount Sterling, KY, sees Brig. Gen. John Hunt Morgan, CSA, driven out of and away from Mount Sterling.

June 9, 1864 - Engagement at Petersburg, VA, as Gen. Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, CSA, throws back Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Butler's, USA, attempt to capture Petersburg, VA.

June 9, 1865 - Maj. Gen. Peter J. Osterhaus, USA, assumes the command of the Dept. of Mississippi.

June 9, 1865 - The unintentional explosion of the ordnance building at Chattanooga, TN, causing approximately 10 casualties. The commanding officer orders the arrest of the ordnance officer for dereliction of duty.

June 9, 1868 - Florida ratifies the 14th Amendment.

June 9, 1893 - Structural failure of the top floor of Ford's Theater causes a collapse of the interior of the building kill 22 and injuring 68.
 
Today marks the 159th Anniversary of the Battle of Port Republic Virginia. This battle was part of Jackson's Valley Campaign of 1862. The battle was fought in Rockingham County Virginia. The result was a Confederate Victory. Confederate Commander was Major General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson commanding a force of 6,000. Casualties and Losses were 816. Union Army Commander was Brig. General Erastus B. Tyler commanding a force of 3,500. Casualties and Losses for the Union Army were 1,002.

Today marks the 158th Anniversary of the Battle of Brandy Station/Battle of Fleetwood Hill. This Battle was part of the Gettysburg Campaign fought on June 9th. The battle took place in Culpeper County Virginia and is looked as both a Union Morale Victory and Confederate tactical victory. The Union Cavalry commander was Brig. General Alfred Pleasonton commanding a force of 11,000. Officer Casualties at this battle were Colonel Benjamin F. Davis, Lt. Colonel Virgil Brodrick, and Major John H. Shelmire. Overall casualties and losses were 69 killed, 352 wounded and 486 missing/captured. Confederate Cavalry Commander was Major General JEB Stuart commanding a force of 9,500. Officer Casualty was Colonel Solomon Williams of 2nd North Carolina Cavalry Regiment. Overall Casualties and Losses were 51 Killed, 250 Wounded, and 132 missing/captured.
 
Today marks the 158th Anniversary of the Battle of Lake Providence Louisiana. This battle was part of the Vicksburg Campaign and was fought on June 9th in Carroll Parish Louisiana. The result of the battle was a Union Victory. Union Army Commander was Brig. General Hugh T. Reid commanding a force of 800 infantry and 200 Cavalry. Union Army Casualties and Losses were 1 killed and 1 wounded. Confederate Army Commander was Lt. Colonel Frank Bartlett commanding a force of 600 cavalry and 2 guns. Casualties and Losses for the Confederate were 2 killed, 5 wounded, and 3 captured.
 
Today marks the 157th Anniversary of First Battle of Petersburg Virginia. This battle took place on June 9, 1864 in Petersburg Virginia. This battle is sometimes called Battle of Old Men and Young Boys. The result was a Confederate Victory. Confederate Commander was General P.G.T. Beauregard and Brig. General Former Governor Henry A. Wise commanding a force of 2,500. Casualties and Losses were 80. Union Army Commanders were Major General Quincy A. Gillmore, Brig. General Edward W. Hinks and Brig. General August Kautz commanding a force of 4,500 with casualties and losses of 40.
 
Today marks the 157th Anniversary of the start of the Battle of Marietta Georgia. This battle took place June 9th - July 3, 1864 in Cobb County Georgia. This battle was part of the Atlanta Campaign. The result was a Union Victory. The Union Army commander was Major General William T. Sherman. Confederate Army Commander was General Joseph E. Johnston. Lt. General Bishop Leonidas Polk would be killed on June 14th.
