David Hunter's Cavalry at Charlottesville, VA, so as to create a diversion while Maj. Gen. George G. Meade, USA, under Grant, moves the Army of the Potomac south across the James River to attack Richmond from the south by way of Petersburg, VA. Sheridan moved west between the North Anna and the Mattaponi Rivers against the Confederate rail line with combats at the following:
