May 24, 1856 - May 25, 1856 - Pottawatomie Massacre - John Brown kills five pro-slavers along this Kansas Creek, Kansas

May 24, 1861 - Federal forces occupy Alexandria, Virginia

May 24, 1861 - Sterling Price refuses to disband his troops in Missouri

May 24, 1861 - Col. Elmer Ephraim Ellsworth of the 11th New York Fire Zouaves is killed in the Marshall House Inn in Alexandria, Virginia, after he and his men removed a Confederate flag. He is generally regarded as the first officer killed while on duty in the American Civil War.

May 24, 1861 - Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Butler, USA, from Fortress Monroe, Hampton, VA, announces to President Lincoln of his determination to employ in the Federal cause fugitive slaves of disloyal owners, causing a political stir as Butler looks upon slaves as contraband, refusing to release 3 Negro slaves.

Today marks the 157th Anniversary of the Battle of Wilson's Wharf/Battle of Fort Pocahontas Virginia. This battle took place in Charles City Virginia and was part of the Overland Campaign. This was a Union Victory. Union Army Commander was Brig. General Edward A. Wild commanding 1,100, 2 Guns and USS Dawn. Casualties and Losses for the Union was 6 killed and 40 wounded. On the Confederate Side was Major General Fitzhugh Lee commanding 2,500 with Casualties and Losses being 200 killed and wounded.

Today marks the 158th​ anniversary of the Battle of Wilson's Wharf. This battle is also called the Battle of Fort Pocahontas. The battle was part of the overland campaign. The battle was fought on May 24th​, 1864. Location of the battle was Charles City, Virginia.
