May 22, 1812 -HMS Hornet arrives in Washington D. C. with a "last formal notice" from the English government.

May 22, 1847 - Skilled white workers at Tredegar Iron Mill in Richmond, VA, tell Joseph Anderson they intend to strike if slaves are used in puddling operations.

May 22, 1848 - May 25, 1848 - In a convention in Baltimore, Maryland, Democrats nominate Lewis Cass for President and William Butler for Vice President.

May 22, 1854 - Invoking seldom-used Clause 119 of the House Rules, Alexander Stephens outwits the opponents of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in the House and passes the bill after an unfavorable return from committee

May 22, 1855 - Kansans hold a supplementary election for districts where voting on March 30, 1855 was disputed. In the 6 districts, 10 Freesoilers and 3 pro-slavery men were elected

May 22, 1856 - Preston Brooks attacks Charles Sumner in the well of the Senate.

May 22, 1862 - Skirmish near Farmington, MS, between Maj. Gen. Henry W. Halleck, USA, and Gen. P. G. T. Beauregard, CSA.

May 22, 1862 - Skirmish at the Trenton and Pollocksville Cross-Roads, NC, near New Berne, NC.

May 22, 1862 - Confederate expedition to John's Island, SC, in search of Union landing parties to drive off.

May 22, 1862 - Skirmish at Winchester, TN.

May 22, 1862 - President Lincoln meets with Maj. Gen. Irvin McDowell, USA, at Fredericksburg, VA, to discuss strategy.
May 22, 1862 - Maj. Gen. Thomas J. Jackson, CSA, crosses Luray Gap, of the Massanutten Mountain, toward Front Royal, Shenandoah Valley, VA.
May 22, 1862 - Federal reconnaissance to New Castle and Hanovertown Ferries, VA, by Col. Richard H. Rush, 6th PA Cavalry.
May 22, 1863 - William Birney, USA, is appointed Brig. Gen.
May 22, 1863 - Skirmish at Fort Gibson, the Indian Territory.
May 22, 1863 - The Federal steamer, Louisiana Belle, is unsuccessfully attacked near Barre's Landing, Bayou Teche, LA, by a band of guerrillas.
May 22, 1863 - Skirmish at Bayou Courtableau, LA.

May 22, 1863 - The assault on the Confederate lines in front of Vicksburg, MS, by Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, USA, ends in failure.

May 22, 1863 - Skirmish at Yellow Creek, TN.

May 22, 1863 - Maj. Gen. Winfield S. Hancock, USA, assumes the command of the 2nd US Army Corps, the Army of the Potomac, VA.

May 22, 1865 - Brig. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton, USA, assumes the command of the Cavalry Corps, Army of the Potomac, VA.

May 22, 1863 - Abraham Lincoln offers command of the Army of the Potomac to Darius Couch. Couch refuses, but recommends George Meade.

May 22, 1864 - Affair near Devall's Bluff, AR, where the Confederates surprise attack and capture some Yankees, escaping toward Des Arc.

May 22, 1864 - Skirmish near Mount Pleasant, MS, 14 miles from Tupelo, as the Confederates kill 12 Federals and capture 5.

May 22, 1864 - The Federal capture and the Confederate recapture of the schooner, Stingaree, off of Brazos, TX, as after a Federal steamer captures the ship, the Rebel commander and his crew served liquor to the Federals, got them drunk, overpowered them, and was able to beach the vessel, escaping from the Federal steamer that originally captured them.

May 22, 1864 - Skirmish at Front Royal, VA.

May 22-Jun 1, 1864 - Operations on the line of the North Anna River, Pamunkey, and the Totopotomy Rivers, VA, as Lieut. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, USA, moving from Guiney's Station, VA, is confronted with Confederate entrenched lines at Hanover Junction, near Richmond, VA, with the following combats:
