May 17, 1863 - Operations on the west side of the Mississippi River, near Port Hudson, LA, by Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks, USA, as Confederate Cavalry capture pickets and cattle.

May 17, 1863 - Skirmish about 3 miles from Bridgeport, MS, with the 6th Missouri Cavalry capturing 2 wagons and about 160 prisoners.

May 17, 1863 - Skirmish on the Bradyville Pike, TN.

May 17, 1863 - Federal scout from La Grange, TN.

May 17, 1863 - Battle of Black River - Pemberton placed his men with their backs to the Black River. When the U. S. attacked, Pemberton's line broke with most of the men crossing the Black River before the bridge was set on fire. Army of the Tennessee then spanned the Big Black, closing in on Vicksburg.

May 17, 1863 - President Lincoln declares Judge Leavitt's denial of motion for habeas corpus in the Vallandigham case the equivalent of 3 victories in the field.

May 17, 1864 - Affair at Madison Station, AL.

May 17, 1865 - Maj. Gen. Edward R. S. Canby, USA, is assigned to the command, and Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks, USA, is relieved from command of the Dept. of The Gulf.

May 17, 1865 - The State of Mississippi is added to the Dept. of the Gulf, LA. The Military Division of West Mississippi is abolished, and the Dept. of the Gulf is constituted from the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and the District of Key West and the Tortugas.

May 17, 1865 - Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan, USA, is assigned to the general command west of the Mississippi River and South of the Arkansas River.

Today marks the 157th Anniversary of the Battle of Adairsville Georgia. This battle was part of the Atlanta Campaign fought after the Battle of Resaca. This would be a Union Victory in this battle. The Union Commander was Major General William T. Sherman Commanding the Union Army Military Division of the Mississippi with a force of 4,174. Casualties and Losses for the Union Army was around 200. The Confederate Commander Was General Joseph E. Johnston commanding the Confederate Army of Tennessee with a force of 4,477.

Adairsville I am relatively unfamiliar with; If I remember correctly, it was where Colonel Francis T. Sherman of 1st Briigade, 2nd Division 4th Corps was wounded and put out of action. Assume the numbers given is in reference to that division. Not sure which force opposed them at Adairsville (I have vague memory of it being Walker's division, but haven't read Castel in forever).

Today Adairsville commemorates its small part in the Andrews Raid or Great Locomotive Chase in its restored depot above in the charming but tiny downtown; another old house of uncertain vintage has been restored below, but I don't recall anything pertaining to the battle there.

Today marks the 159th​ anniversary of the Battle of Big Black River Bridge. This battle was part of the Vicksburg Mississippi campaign. The battle was fought on May 17th​, 1863. Location of the battle was Hinds County, Mississippi.
