May 11, 1858 - Minnesota enters the Union as a free state.
May 11, 1861 - Ben McCulloch, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.
May 11, 1861 - Pro-Union demonstrations are held in San Francisco, CA.
May 11, 1861 - Riot in Saint Louis, MO, continues from the previous day which results in several additional deaths. The 5th Missouri Reserve Regiment quell the secessionist uproar.
May 11, 1861 - Brig. Gen. William S. Harney, USA, resumes the command of the Dept. of the West.
May 11, 1861 - Pro-Union demonstrations are held in Wheeling, VA.
May 11, 1862 - Brig. Gen. John Selden Roane, CSA, is assigned to the command in Arkansas.
May 11, 1862 - Affair at Cave City, KY, where Col. John Hunt Morgan, CSA, captured a passenger train on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, KY.
May 11, 1862 - Skirmish at Pulaski, TN.
May 11, 1862 - With the loss of Norfolk, VA, the Confederates destroy their ironclad, the CSS Virginia, James River, VA, as she no longer has a port to call home, and was forced to move up the James River into water too shallow.

May 11, 1864 - Maj. Gen. James Ewell Brown "Jeb" Stuart, CSA, is mortally wounded at the combat of Yellow Tavern, VA, while defending Richmond, VA, from Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan's, USA, cavalry raid, receiving a pistol wound in his stomach.
May 11, 1864 - Federal expedition from Point Lookout, MD, aboard the transport steamer, Star, and the gunboat, Yankee, to the Rappahannock River, VA, for the purpose of destroying Confederate torpedoes. {May 11-14)

May 11, 1864 - The Battle of Rock Face, Georgia. Sherman's army withdraws from in front of Rocky Face Ridge. Discovering Sherman's movement, Johnston retires south towards Resaca.
