May 3, 1816 - Montgomery Cunningham Meigs, American Brevet Major General (Union Army), born in Washington, D.C. (d. 1892)

May 3, 1861 - General Winfield Scott orders troops to seize Arlington Heights, overlooking Washington D. C.

May 3, 1861 - President Lincoln creates the Dept. of the Ohio, consisting of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, and assigns George Brinton McClellan, Maj. Gen. of Ohio Militia, to its command.

May 3, 1861 - Governor John Letcher of Virginia issues a call for additional volunteer forces.

May 3, 1861 - In Washington, DC, Bvt. Lieut. Gen. Winfield Scott develops the Anaconda Plan, whereby the Union envelopes the Southern states by use of a Naval blockade of all major ports.

May 3, 1862 - Edward Otho Cresap Ord, U.S.A. is appointed Maj. Gen.

May 3, 1862 - Skirmish at Batesville, AR, with Brig. Gen. Samuel Curtis, USA.

May 3, 1862 - The destruction of bridges on Lookout Creek, near Lookout Mountain, GA.

May 3, 1862 - Skirmish at Watkins' Ferry, GA.

May 3, 1862 - Federal reconnaissance to and skirmish at Farmington, MS, between Maj. Gen. Henry W. Halleck, USA, and Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard, CSA.

May 3, 1862 - Federal reconnaissances to the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, MS.

May 3, 1862 - Yorktown, VA, is evacuated by the Confederates, under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, CSA, and Maj. Gen John Magruder, CSA, before Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan, USA, could use his heavy artillery siege guns.

May 3, 1862 - Martial law is proclaimed in Southwest Virginia.

May 3, 1863 - Brig. Gen. Elisha Franklin Paxton, CSA, is mortally wounded on the 2nd day of the Chancellorsville, VA, Battle, dying instantly from a rifle shot while leading an attack on the Federal lines.

May 3, 1863 - Maj. Gen. Hiram Gregory Berry, USA, is mortally wounded while attempting to regroup his command after Stonewall Jackson's surprise flank attack at the Battle of Chancellorsville, VA.

May 3, 1863 - Brig. Gen. Edmund Kirby, USA, is mortally wounded near the Chancellor House, while commanding an artillery battery, receiving a dangerous leg wound from cannon fire.

May 3, 1863 - Gouverneur Kemble Warren, U.S.A., is appointed Maj. Gen.

May 3, 1863 - Skirmish and surrender of Col. Streight, USA, to Brig. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, CSA, near Cedar Bluff, AL. Col. Streight and his subordinate officers are sent to Libby Prison, Richmond, VA.

May 3, 1863 - The evacuation of Grand Gulf, MS, by the Confederates.

May 3, 1863 - Skirmishes on the North Fork of Bayou Pierre, at Willow Springs, Ingraham's Heights, Jones' Cross-Roads, Forty Hills, and Hankinson's Ferry, the Big Black River, MS.

May 3, 1863 - Skirmishes near Hill's Point and Reed's Ferry, on the Nansemond River, near Suffolk, VA, with Lieut. Gen. James Longstreet, CSA.

Federal reconnaissance on the Providence Church Road, VA, near Suffolk, VA.

May 3, 1863 - Skirmish at South Anna Bridge, Ashland, VA, with Maj. Gen. George Stoneman's, USA, Cavalry.

May 3, 1863 - Skirmish at Warrenton Junction, VA, where Capt. John S. Mosby, CSA, surprises and captures Union cavalry; is then surprised himself by the 1st WV Cavalry and loses most of his prisoners.

May 3, 1863 - Frederick Steele returns to Little Rock, marking the end of the Red River Campaign.

May 3, 1864 - President Abraham Lincoln and his Cabinet discuss the alleged massacre of surrendered, unarmed Federal troops, many black, by Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest's, CSA, Cavalry command at Fort Pillow, TN.

May 3, 1865 - Joseph "Joe" Brown, Governor of Georgia, calls a meeting of the state legislature when word reaches him of Joe Johnston's surrender.

May 3, 1865 - Federal expedition against Cheyenne Indians from Fort Laramie to Wind River, the Dakota Territory. (May 3-21)

May 3, 1865 - Federal operations about Fort Adams, MS, with the assistance of the steamer, Magnet, and the gunboat, Chillicothe. Rumor has it Davis, with a small escort, crossed the river at Quitman.

May 3, 1865 - News is arriving of the surrender of Lieut. Gen. Richard Taylor's Confederate forces. (May 3-6)

May 3, 1865 - Federal expedition from Rodney to Port Gibson, MS, with skirmishes. (May 3-6)

May 3, 1865 - Skirmishes on the Missouri River about 15 miles south of Boonville, MO, as the Federals surprise numerous guerrillas attempting to ford the Missouri River.

May 3, 1865 - Affair with attacking guerrillas near Pleasant Hill, MO, the outlaws escaping towards the Snibar Hills.

May 3, 1865 - Federal expeditions from Fort Churchill to Carson Lake and the Truckee and Humboldt Rivers, Nevada, against a threatened Indian uprising. (May 3-Jun 15)

May 3, 1865 - President Jefferson Davis' entourage continues to dwindle as Confederate Secretary of State, Judah P. Benjamin, resigns and flees, eventually reaching England.

May 3, 1865 - President Abraham Lincoln's funeral train reaches its final destination of Springfield, IL.
 
Today marks the 158th Anniversary of the Second Battle of Fredericksburg Virginia. This will be a Union Victory the union commander was Major General John B. Sedgwick with a command of 27,1000 and casualties and losses of 1,100. The Confederate Commander was Major General Jubal A. Early with a command of 12,000 casualties and losses for the Confederate Army was 700.

Today mark's the 158th Anniversary of the 1st Day of the Battle of Salem Church/Banks Ford Virginia. This was a Confederate Victory The Confederate forces will consist of Major General Lafayette McLaws/Brig. General Cadmus M. Wilcox/Brig. General William Mahone. The Confederate force consisted of 10,000 with casualties and losses combined of 4,935. The Union Commander was Major General John B. Sedgwick with a force of 23,000 casualties and losses of a combined number of 4,611.

General Scott was well respected and thought to be a very skilled general. The Anaconda Plan was a great general plan to win the war. The Anaconda Plan would have needed some updates as the war went on.
 
Second Battle of Fredericksburg:
Today marks the 159th​ anniversary of the Second Battle of Fredericksburg. The battle is also called the Second Battle of Marye's Heights. Location of the battle was Fredericksburg, Virginia. The battle was fought on May 3rd​, 1863.
