This garrulous gentleman (when president of Harvard) helped a twenty-nine year old lady when she discovered something special in 1847. She was given an award for her discovery from a foreign government and went on to have a stellar career.

5. What was the award ? A gold medal; The medal had been offered in 1832 by King Frederick VI of Denmark to the first person who discovered a comet by telescope. By the time the comet was discovered, the king was dead — but his son, though uninterested in science, had resolved to make good on his father’s promise. On Oct. 6, 1848, King Frederick VII awarded Maria Mitchell the gold medal.
