April 18, 1847 - Battle of Cerro Gordo - Mexican American War.

April 18, 1861 - Robert E. Lee is offered command of the United States Army.

April 18, 1861 - Troops begin to arrive in Washington, D. C.

April 18, 1861 - Federal forces withdraw from Harpers Ferry, Virginia.

April 18, 1861 - The US Army subsistence stores are seized at Pine Bluff, AR.

April 18, 1861 - Maj. Gen. William B. Taliaferro is assigned to the command of the Virginia forces at Norfolk, VA

April 18, 1862 - Federal fleet begins a 5-day bombardment of Fort Jackson and Fort St. Philip, Louisiana.

April 18, 1862 - Col. Justus Steinberger, 1st Washington Territory Infantry, is assigned to command of the District of the Oregon Territory.

April 18, 1862 - Skirmish at, and the occupation of, Falmouth, VA, across from Fredericksburg, VA, by Maj. Gen. Irvin McDowell, USA.

April 18, 1862 - Federal reconnaissance to the Rappahannock River, VA, under Brig. Gen. John J. Abercrombie, USA.

April 18, 1863 - Skirmish at Fayetteville, AR, with Brig. Gen. John S. Marmaduke's, CSA, raiding party being repulsed.

April 18, 1863 - The destruction of the CSA salt-works near New Iberia, LA.

April 18, 1863 - Skirmishes at New Albany, MS, with Col. Benjamin H. Grierson, USA. (Apr 18-19)

April 18, 1863 - Federal scout through Shannon County, MO.

April 18, 1863 - Federal scout from Salem to Sinking Creek, the Current River, and the Big Creek, MO. (Apr 18-22)

April 18, 1863 - Skirmish at Hartsville, TN, as the Rebels capture much needed beef cattle.

April 18, 1863 - Federal expedition from Memphis, TN, to the Coldwater, MS, including action: (Apr 18) at Hernando, and skirmish (Apr 19) at Perry's Ferry. (Apr 18-24)

April 18, 1863 - Affair at Sabine Pass, TX, as the Confederates rout the Union landing party.

April 18, 1863 - Affair near Johnstown, Harrison County, WV, with the Federals.

April 18, 1864 - Samuel Bell Maxey, C.S.A., is appointed Maj. Gen.

April 18, 1864 - Skirmish near Decatur, AL, where the Confederates repel a Union advance.

April 18, 1864 - Federal expedition from Burkesville, KY, to Obey's River, TN, with prisoners including one Rebel accused of murdering a Union soldier. (Apr 18-20)

April 18, 1864 - Affair at Hunnewell, MO, as local citizens attempt to fend off some plundering bushwackers with mortalities on both sides.

April 18, 1864 - Skirmish at Boyken's Mills, SC.

April 18, 1864 - Battle of Poison Spring - Sterling Price [CS] and John Marmaduke [CS] raid US supply wagons heading for Grand Ecore to relieve Nathaniel Banks [US] failed expedition. After heavy fighting the federals were forced to withdraw

April 18, 1864 - General P. G. T. Beauregard is ordered to take command of the Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia.

April 18, 1865 - Skirmish at the Double Bridges, over the Flint River, GA, as Brig. Gen. James H. Wilson, USA, and his Union Cavalry presses on.

April 18, 1865 - Skirmish at Pleasant Hill, GA, with Brig. Gen. James H. Wilson, USA.

April 18, 1865 - Skirmish near Taylorsville, KY.

April 18, 1865 - Hostilities between the armies of Generals William T. Sherman, USA, and of Joseph E. Johnston, CSA, are suspended in North Carolina as a broad agreement is reached that attempts to cross military boundaries and borders on a political plan that will have to be approved by the US Government. (Apr 18-26)

April 18, 1865 - Skirmish 6 miles from Germantown, TN.

April 18th was a busy day over the years. Thanks for posting. I learn so much from these days in history. Can look things up and add to my knowledge. That is also why I do "Today In Food History" on the Food Forum. You gave me inspiration to start it.
 
News Articles about the Battle of Forts Jackson and Saint Philip Louisiana. This was a Union Victory the battle was April 18th - April 28th 1862. Confederate Commanders were John K. Duncan, John K. Mitchell and John A. Stephenson. Union Navy Commander was David G. Farragut. According to numbers I was able to find there was a Confederate casualty rate of 782 and a Union Loss of 229.
