March 18, 1829 - William R Boggs, American Brigadier General (Confederate Army) and chief of engineers, born in Augusta, Georgia (d. 1911)

March 18, 1839 - Francis Fessenden, American lawyer, politician, and Major General (Union Army), born in Portland, Maine (d. 1906)

March 18, 1861 - By a vote of 39-35 the Arkansas convention defeats a secession motion. Instead, they vote to allow a general election in August to determine the question of secession.

March 18, 1861 - The Arkansas State Convention held at Little Rock, AR, votes against seceding, 39-35, but agrees to another vote later in the year.

March 18, 1861 - Lieut. Adam Jacoby Slemmer, USA, who is commanding at Fort Pickens, FL, returns 4 fugitive slaves to their masters.

March 18, 1861 - The Governor of Texas, Sam Houston, quietly leaves office rather than swear allegiance to the Confederacy.

March 18, 1861 - The affair with Indians on the Columbia River, near the Kootenay River, the Washington Territory.

March 18, 1864 - Federal scout from Island No. 10, TN, aboard the steamer, John Rowe, to New Madrid, MO. The party included Company C, 7th Louisiana Infantry of African descent, with no encounters.

March 18, 1864 - Lieut. Gen. James Longstreet, CSA, resumes the command of the Dept. of East Tennessee.

March 18, 1865 - Thomas James Churchill, C.S.A., is appointed Maj. Gen.

March 18, 1865 - Federal expedition from Fort Gibson to the following in the Indian Territory:
Deep Fork, 50 miles from Fort Gibson
We-wo-ka, 85 miles southwest of Fort Gibson
Little River Town, 25 miles southwest of We-wo-ka
Hillabee, 20 miles east of We-wo-ka
Canadian River, 20 miles southeast of We-wo-ka, with no
encounters with the enemy. The Yankees report there are
no longer any citizens living in this part of the Territory.

March 18, 1865 - Brig. Gen. Joseph L. Brent, CSA, assumes the command of the Cavalry Forces, of the Front Lines, of the District of West Louisiana.

March 18, 1865 - Skirmish near Benton's Cross-Roads, NC, as Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Confederate Army of 20,000 faces the total combined army of Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, USA, of 100,000. Johnston decides to attack the Union column of 30,000 under Maj. Gen. Henry W. Slocum, USA, with Lieut. Gen. Wade Hampton's, CSA, Cavalry attacking Brig. Gen. Judson Kilpatrick and his Union Cavalry.

March 18, 1865 - Skirmish at Bushy Swamp, NC.

March 18, 1865 - Maj. Gen. Jacob D. Cox, USA, is relieved from the command of the District of Beaufort, SC, and is assigned to command the Provisional Corps, SC.

March 18, 1865 - Skirmish near Dranesville, VA, as the Federal Cavalry patrol confronts and routs a party of Rebel Cavalry, inflicting casualties.
