March 13, 1818 - Albion Parris Howe, American Brevet Major General (Union Army), born in Standish, Maine (d. 1897)

March 13, 1820 - Louis Hébert, American Brigadier General (Confederate Army) and civil engineer, born in Iberville Parish, Louisiana (d. 1901)

March 13, 1861 - The Confederate States of America attempts a peaceful adjustment of issues arising from separation (Forsyth and Crawford). Secretary of State William Seward, under the direction of the President, refuses.

March 13, 1861 - Capt. Nathaniel Lyon, 2d US Infantry, is assigned to the command of the Saint Louis, MO, Arsenal, with subsequent orders to arm the loyal citizens and execute the laws of the United States of America.

March 13, 1862 - U. S. Grant is reinstated to his command in Tennessee.

March 13, 1862 - John Bordenave Villepigue, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

March 13, 1862 - Daniel Tyler, USA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

March 13, 1862 - Action at Spring River, AR.

March 13, 1862 - Maj. Gen. Henry Wager Halleck, USA, assumes the command of the Dept. of the Mississippi.

March 13, 1862 - The destruction of the Beach Creek Bridge, on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, TN.

March 13, 1862 - The US Army Corps are organized in the Army of the Potomac, VA, under the following Army Corp Commanders:

March 13, 1862 - Gen. Robert E. Lee, CSA, is charged with the conduct of military operations in the Armies of the Confederacy.

March 13, 1862 - Additional Article of War is approved forbidding all officers and soldiers of the US Army from aiding in the capture and return of fugitive slaves to their disloyal owners.

March 13, 1863 - The following are appointed Union Brigadier Generals:

March 13, 1863 - The capture of Confederate conscripts near Charlotte, TN. (Mar 13-14)

March 13, 1863 - Skirmish at Rover, TN, with Union cavalry and Brig Gen. John Austin Wharton, CSA.

March 13, 1863 - The 3rd Army Division, 9th US Army Corps, Maj. Gen. Smith, USA Commanding, is transferred from Newport News to Suffolk, VA. (Mar 13-16)

March 13, 1863 - An explosion in the Confederate Ordinance Laboratory on Brown's Island in the James River near Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond kills 69 people, 62 of them women and young girls. A friction primer exploded.

March 13, 1864 - Skirmish at Carrollton, AR.

March 13, 1864 - Federal scouts from Yellville to Buffalo River, AR, including encounters with guerrillas and bushwhackers. (Mar 13-26)

March 13, 1864 - The Confederate steamer, Sumter, is captured in Lake George, FL, by the Federal armed tug, the Columbine.

March 13, 1865 - George Washington Getty, U.S.A., is appointed Maj. Gen.

March 13, 1865 - James Brewerton Ricketts, U.S.A., is appointed Maj. Gen.

March 13, 1865 - Wager Swayne, USA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

March 13, 1865 - Affair 1 mile from Dalton, GA, as the attacking Confederates capture 5 railroad hands on the Cleveland road. The Yankees pursue and kill 2 of the Rebels, and capture 1.

March 13, 1865 - Col. John Morrill, 64th Illinois Infantry, is assigned to the command of the District of Rolla, MO.

March 13, 1865 - Skirmish near Fayetteville, NC.

March 13, 1865 - Skirmish near Beaver Dam Station, VA, with Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan's, USA, Cavalry force on their way to join up with the Union forces under Lieut. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, USA, on the siege lines of Petersburg, VA.

March 13, 1865 - After delays and debate which has been going on for quite some time, the Confederate Congress approves putting Negroes in the Confederate Army to shore up the weak numbers. President Jefferson Davis signs the bill immediately.

March 13, 1865 - Skirmish near Charlestown, WV.

March 13, 1868 - The Impeachment Trial of Andrew Johnson opens. He is charged with violation of the Tenure of Office Act.

March 13, 1901 - Benjamin Harrison, 23rd President of the United States (Republican: 1889-93), dies in Indianapolis, IN, at 67.

March 13, 1911 - John J. Toffey, American Civil War Medal of Honor recipient dies in Pawling, NY. (b. 1844)
 
Battle of Fort Anderson:
Today marks the start of the 159th​ anniversary of three – day Battle of Fort Anderson. This battle took place on March 13, 1863 – March 15, 1863. The battle took place in Craven County North Carolina. This battle was also called the Battle of Deep Gully.
