March 12, 1862 - Jacksonville, Florida is occupied by Union naval forces.

March 12, 1862 - The siege of Island No. 10 is ongoing.

March 12, 1864 - Three days after it happened, the order making Lieutenant General Grant general-in-chief is announced to the public. General Henry Halleck is relieved of duty at his own request.

March 12, 1864 - Nathaniel Banks [US] begins the Red River Campaign in Louisiana.

March 12, 1864 - Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant assumes command of the armies of the United States.

March 12, 1865 - The siege of Petersburg is ongoing.

March 12, 1865 - Letter from W. T. Sherman to U. S. Grant in which Sherman wrote of the importance of his march, and how a city like Fayetteville, NC should never be able to possess an arsenal, as it was “such valuable property to a people who have betrayed a trust.” Sherman promised to destroy the arsenal. It was destroyed.

That is, Halleck was relieved as general-in-chief. He continued to serve as chief of staff for the remainder of the war, and his administrative talents were of considerable value to the Union. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he took his demotion in good grace, and he and Grant made a good team.
