March 5, 1825 - John Dunovant, Brigadier General (Confederate Army), born in Chester, SC. (d. 1864)

March 5, 1836 - Samuel Colt manufactures first pistol, 34-caliber "Texas" model.

March 5, 1847 - In Jones v. Van Zandt, the Taney Supreme Court decided Congress has the power to control slavery.

March 5, 1856 - Georgia becomes 1st state to regulate railroads.

March 5, 1861 - The First Confederate Flag, known as the "Stars and Bars," is introduced.

March 5, 1861 - Texas secessionist convention accepts Confederate statehood.

March 5, 1861 - All US troops in the Dept. of Texas are ordered to the coast for transportation to the state of New York.

March 5, 1862 - James Morrison Hawes, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

March 5, 1862 - James Gallant Spears, USA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

March 5, 1862 - Gen. Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, CSA, assumes command of the Army of the Mississippi, based at Jackson, TN.

March 5, 1862 - Skirmish near Pohick Church, or Occoquan, VA, with Col. Alexander Hays, 63rd PA Infantry.

March 5, 1862 - Skirmish at Bunker Hill, north of Winchester, VA, with Brig. Gen. Alpheus S. Williams, USA.

March 5, 1862 - Union troops under Brigadier General Wright occupy Fernandina, Florida.

March 5, 1863 - Skirmish near Fort Smith, AR.

March 5, 1863 - Federal expedition from Helena, AR, up the St. Francis and Little Rivers, with skirmish at Madison, AR. (Mar 5-12)

March 5, 1863 - Federal operations in Newton and Jasper Counties, MO. (Mar 5-13)

March 5, 1863 - Action near Franklin, TN, with the defeat of Col. Coburn, USA, and the occupation of the town by the Confederates.

March 5, 1864 - Alpheus Baker, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

March 5, 1864 - Daniel Harris Reynolds, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

March 5, 1864 - Skirmish at Leet's Tanyard, GA, where Maj. Gen. Joseph Wheeler's Confederate cavalry attacks Brig. Gen. Absalom Baird's Cavalry of the 3rd Division, 14th US Army Corps, capturing their camps, wagons, stores, prisoners, etc.

March 5, 1864 - Confederate attack on Yazoo City, MS, is repelled, the Meridian, MS, Expedition.

March 5, 1864 - Skirmish at Panther's Springs, TN, with Brig. Gen. Jacob D. Cox, USA.

March 5, 1864 - Maj. Gen. John C. Breckinridge, CSA, supersedes Maj. Gen. Samuel Jones, CSA, in the command of the Trans-Allegheny or Western Dept. of Virginia.

March 5, 1864 - Commander John Taylor Wood's Confederate raid on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, at Cherrystone Point, VA, where a telegraph station is seized. Wood also sinks a large schooner, bonds the steamer Iolas, escaping in the steam-tug, Titan, to Mathews County, in the neighborhood of Mobjack Bay.

March 5, 1865 - The siege of Petersburg is ongoing.

March 5, 1865 - Federal scouts from Waynesville to Mutton Valley, Rolla, and Lebanon, MO, in search of the guerrillas who captured and murdered a citizen of Waynesville, MO. (Mar 5-12)

March 5, 1865 - Skirmish near Cheraw, SC, as Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, USA, prepares to invade North Carolina, crossing the Pee Dee River, and striking for Fayetteville.

March 5, 1865 - Federal expedition from Fortress Monroe to Fredericksburg, VA, with the destruction of all Confederate property of value along the way. (Mar 5-8)

March 5, 1865 - President Abraham Lincoln appoints Hugh McCulloch, Comptroller of the Currency, to the position of Secretary of the Treasury to replace William Fessenden who resigned after being reelected to the Senate from his home state of Maine.

March 5, 1867 - Alexandria, Virginia rejects thousand of votes cast by Negroes, who were granted universal suffrage under the Reconstruction Act.

March 5, 1868 - The US Senate organizes to decide impeachment charges against President Andrew Johnson.
