February 27, 1823 - William Buel Franklin, American Major General (Union Army), born in York, Pennsylvania (d. 1903)

February 27, 1827 - Richard W Johnson, American Brevet Major General (Union Army), born in Livingston County, Kentucky (d. 1897)

February 27, 1860 - After being photographed by Matthew Brady, Abraham Lincoln speaks at the Cooper Institute in New York City.

February 27, 1861 - The Peace Conference assembled in Washington, DC, continues to work towards a peaceful solution to the secession crisis.

February 27, 1862 - The following are appointed Confederate Brigadier Generals:
Danville Leadbetter, CSA.
William Whann Mackall, CSA.
Carter Littlepage Stevenson, CSA.

February 27, 1862 - President Jefferson Davis is given the authority by the Confederate Congress to suspend habeas corpus, similar to actions taken by President Abraham Lincoln.

February 27, 1863 - Maj. Gen. Sterling Price, CSA, is ordered to the Confederate Trans-Mississippi Dept, AR.

February 27, 1863 - Federal expedition from Fort Pillow, TN.

February 27, 1863 - Skirmish near Bloomington, on the Hatchie River, TN.

February 27, 1863 - Brig. Gen. James S. Wadsworth, USA, is temporarily in command of the 1st US Army Corps, the Army of the Potomac, VA.

February 27, 1863 - Federal scout from Centreville to Falmouth, VA. (Feb 27-28)

February 27, 1864 - Skirmish at Pinos Altos, the Arizona Territory.

February 27, 1864 - The destruction of Confederate salt-works on Goose Creek near St. Mark's, FL.

February 27, 1864 - The Confederate Prison Camp at Andersonville, GA, (officially called Camp Sumter) is put in service near Americus, GA, to help relieve the overcrowding of prisoners at Belle Isle, Richmond, VA.

February 27, 1864 - Skirmish at Madisonville, MS, the Meridian, MS, Expedition.

February 27, 1864 - Skirmish at Sharon, MS, the Meridian, MS, Expedition.

February 27, 1864 - Skirmish at the Stone Church, near Catoosa Platform, GA, the final encounter during the Union demonstration on Dalton, GA.

February 27, 1864 - Affair near Poplar Bluff, MO, where the Yankee scouts burn a Rebel wagon train, killing some jayhawkers in the process.

February 27, 1864 - Skirmish in the Sequatchie Valley, TN, with many Union prisoners, Col. John M. Hughs, CSA, Confederate operations in Middle Tennessee.

February 27, 1865 - The siege of Petersburg is ongoing.

February 27, 1865 - Brig. Gen. John M. Thayer, USA, is assigned to the command of the Post of Saint Charles, AR.

February 27, 1865 - Skirmish at Spring Place, GA.

February 27, 1865 - Brig. Gen. Edmund J. Davis, USA, assumes the temporary command of the US forces at Morganza, LA.

February 27, 1865 - Brig. Gen. Morgan L. Smith, USA, assumes the command of the District of Vicksburg, MS.

February 27, 1865 - Brig. Gen. John McNeil, USA, assumes the command of the District of Central Missouri.

February 27, 1865 - Skirmish near Sturgeon, MO, with guerrillas in the dark.

February 27, 1865 - Skirmish at Cloud's House, SC.

February 27, 1865 - Skirmish near Mount Elon, SC.

February 27, 1865 - Final operations in the Shenandoah Valley, VA. (Feb 27-Apr 23)

February 27, 1865 - Federal expedition from Winchester, VA, to the front of Petersburg, VA. (Feb 27-Mar 28)

February 27, 1865 - Maj. Gen. Philip Henry Sheridan's US command starts from Winchester, VA, to Petersburg, VA, as Brig. Gen. Wesley Merritt, USA, moves with 10,000 Union Cavalry to operate against the Virginia Central Railroad and the James River Canal. Merrit is also ordered to capture Lynchburg, VA. Lieut. Gen. Jubal Early, CSA, attempts to gather as many Confederates as possible to deflect this latest Union advance.

February 27, 1865 - Gen. Robert E. Lee, CSA, is and has been concerned over the large number of desertions his army has been facing. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia's strength is rapidly dwindling.

February 27, 1869 - John Menard is 1st African American to make a speech in the US Congress.

Somewhere in all the threads from our Chickamauga gathering last year,is a pic of all of us at the Stone Church...I think. Catoosa Station is in Georgia.
