January 24, 1811 - Last of several acts to renew the charter of the first Bank of the United States fails in Congress.

January 24, 1832 - John Pegram, Brigadier General (Confederate Army), born in Petersburg, VA. (d. 1865)

January 24, 1848 - Discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in California.

January 24, 1854 - Salmon Chase (writer) and Charles Sumner (editor) release the "Appeal of the Independent Democrats in Congress to the People of the United States," attacking the Nebraska Act. (the appeal was written before the act was revised)

January 24, 1856 - Franklin Pierce rejects the Topeka Constitution because the vote did not constitute "...the body politic."

January 24, 1861 - Lucy, a female slave from Wheeling who fled to Cleveland, Ohio, is returned to her owner. She is the last slave to be returned under the Fugitive Slave Law.

January 24, 1861 - US Arsenal at Augusta, G A, is seized by the Georgia state troops, Col. A. R. Lawton, commanding.

January 24, 1861 - Union reinforcements for Fort Pickens, FL, sail from Fortress Monroe, VA.

January 24, 1862 - Richard Stoddert Ewell, C.S.A., is appointed Maj. Gen.

January 24, 1862 - Bushrod Rust Johnson, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen. James McQueen Mclntosh, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

January 24, 1862 - Lewis Golding Arnold, USA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

January 24, 1862 - Federal expedition to the Little Sandy and Piketon, KY. (Jan 24-30)

January 24, 1863 - Skirmish at Woodbury, TN.

January 24, 1863 - Federal scouts in Fauquier County, VA. (Jan 24-26)

January 24, 1864 - Brig. Gen. Stephen Gardner Champlin, USA, dies at Grand Rapids, MI, from a painful and lingering hip wound he received May 31 1864, at the Battle of Seven Pines, VA.

January 24, 1864 - Confederate operations near Natchez, MS, where Brig. Gen. Wirt Adams, CSA, reports the capture of 35 prisoners and 60 drays and teams.

January 24, 1864 - Union pickets are captured at Love's Hill, 5.5 miles northeast of Knoxville, TN. A couple lucky ones escape.

January 24, 1864 - Skirmish at Tazewell, TN, as the Confederates dash upon the town on the Big Springs and Bear Creek Roads, coming from the Clinch River, but are forced to withdraw after fighting.

January 24, 1864 - Federal expedition up the James River, VA, with the assistance of the gunboats, General Jesup, Smith Briggs, and the transport, George Washington. They leave Norfolk for Newport News, then to Brandon near Fort Powhatan, where a local doctor and his property is seized for dealing with the Confederates, while the General Jesup seizes two blockade runners, the sloop Birdloe of Warwick, and the schooner, Thomas F. Dawson, seizing gold, silver, US and Confederate Bank notes, etc. (Jan 24-25)

January 24, 1865 - The siege of Petersburg is ongoing.

January 24, 1865 - Skirmish at Fayetteville, AR.

January 24, 1865 - Skirmish near Bayou Goula, LA, with guerrillas.

January 24, 1865 - The expedition from Cape Girardeau, MO, to Eleven Points River, AR, as the Yankees find many families starving. The Federals use their own funds to buy food for the destitute, taking money from the wealthier Rebel families they come across. Many families profess their men have been taken off by the Confederates, conscripted. Whether they went voluntarily or not, the families are fed tonight out of the goodness of these Federal soldiers who passed their way this evening. (Jan 24-Feb 22)

January 24, 1865 - Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, CSA, assumes the command of the District of Mississippi, East Louisiana, and West Tennessee.

January 24, 1865 - Bvt. Maj. Gen. Orlando B. Wilcox, USA, is placed in temporary command of the 9th US Army Corps, the Richmond, VA, Campaign.
