January 16, 1815 - Henry Wager "Old Brains" Halleck, American expert in military studies and Major General (Union Army), born in Oneida County, New York (d. 1872)

January 16, 1821 - John Cabell Breckinridge born, near Lexington, Kentucky.

January 16, 1825 - General George E. Pickett born in Richmond, VA.

January 16, 1834 - Albert Lindley Lee, American lawyer, Kansas State Supreme Court Judge, and Brigadier General (Union Army), born in Fulton, New York (d. 1907)

January 16, 1837 - James Phillip Simms, Brigadier General (Confederate Army), born in Covington, GA.(d. 1887)

January 16, 1847 - John C. Fremont is appointed Governor of the new California Territory

January 16, 1854 - Kentucky Senator Dixon offers an amendment to the Kansas-Nebraska Act repealing the Missouri Compromise.

January 16, 1865 - Alfred Howe Terry, U.S.A., is appointed Maj. Gen.

January 16, 1865 - Federal expedition from Brashear City aboard the Union gunboat, No. 41, and the steamer, Carrie, to Whisky Bayou, LA. The Yankees visit numerous plantations on their excursion, taking everything of value, destroying what they can't take with them. (Jan 16-18)

January 16, 1865 - Federal operations about Waynesville, MO, including skirmish with guerrillas near McCourtney's Mills, on Big Piney. (Jan 16-22)

January 16, 1865 - Fort Caswell is blown up and the defensive works at Smithville and Reeves' Point, NC, are abandoned by the Confederate forces under Gen. Braxton Bragg, CSA. (Jan 16-17)

January 16, 1865 - The powder magazines at the captured Fort Fisher, NC, accidentally explode, causing over 100 Union casualties. Rumor has it a some drunken Union soldiers and/or sailors May have unknowingly set off the explosion.

January 16, 1865 - Federal scouts about Franklin, TN, against bushwhackers, where some are surrounded and killed at the house of a Mrs. Cherry who was an eyewitness to the killings. (Jan 16-Feb 20)

January 16, 1867 - West Virginia ratifies the 14th Amendment.

January 16, 1867 - Michigan ratifies the 14th Amendment.

January 16, 1867 - Minnesota ratifies the 14th Amendment.

January 16, 1901 - Hiram R. Revels, American politician, 1st African American Senator, dies at 73 in Aberdeen, MS.

January 16, 1913 - Thaddeus S. C. Lowe, American aeronaut and inventor, dies at 80 in Pasadena, California.
