January 11, 1807 - Alfred Eugene "Mudwall" Jackson, Brigadier General is born in Davidson County, Tennessee. (Confederate Army)

January 11, 1812 - The Giles Bill is signed into law. It increases the sized of the Army and Navy to 25,000 men.

January 11, 1814 - Richard Griffith, Brigadier General (Confederate Army), born in Philadelphia, PA. (d. 1862)

January 11, 1816 - Fitz Henry Warren, American Brevet Major General (Union Army), born in Brimfield, Massachusetts (d. 1878)

January 11, 1818 - John Reese Kenly, American Brevet Major General (Union Army), born in Baltimore, Maryland (d. 1891)

January 11, 1831 - James Ronald Chalmers, American Brigadier General (Confederate Army), born in Halifax County, Virginia (d. 1898)

January 11, 1832 - During a regular session of the Virginia legislature, a two week debate began on the abolition of slavery. Pro-abolition forces suffered because they could not agree on a plan for gradual abolition.

January 11, 1861 - Alabama secedes from the Union.

January 11, 1861 - South Carolina demands the surrender of Fort Sumter. Major Anderson refuses.

January 11, 1861 - Federal soldiers seize buildings in St. Louis, Missouri to prevent them from falling into Rebel hands.

January 11, 1862 - Simon Cameron resigns as Secretary of War.

January 11, 1862 - James Abram Garfield, USA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

January 11, 1862 - The Dept. of Key West, FL, is constituted, under the command of Brig. Gen. John Milton Brannan, USA.

January 11, 1862 - Writ of habeas corpus is issued in the case of Daniel Smith and six other bridge-burners in East TN.

January 11, 1862 - The Burnside Expedition, with about 100 ships, sails from Fort Monroe, VA, the VA Peninsula, for the North Carolina Coast, including Roanoke Island, NC.

January 11, 1863 - The Federal capture of Fort Hindman, AR, commanded by Brig. Gen. Thomas J. Churchill, CSA, by the joint efforts of Maj. Gen. John McClernand, USA, and Admiral David Dixon Porter, USN.

January 11, 1863 - Engagement at Hartville, or Wood's Fork, MO, where Brig. Gen. John S. Marmaduke, CSA, is defeated by Col. Merrill, USA.

January 11, 1863 - Skirmish at Lowry's Ferry, TN.

January 11, 1863 - The USS Grampers Number Two is destroyed and sunk by the Confederate forces near Memphis, TN, on the Mississippi River.

January 11, 1863 - Maj. Gen. James B. McPherson, USA, assumes the command of the 17th US Army Corps, TN.

January 11, 1863 - The capture and sinking of the USS Hatteras off the coast of Galveston, TX, by the Confederate Raider, CSS Alabama.

January 11, 1864 - The siege of Petersburg is ongoing.

January 11, 1864 - The 13th Amendment (ending slavery) to the Constitution is proposed by Senator John B. Henderson of Missouri.

January 11, 1864 - Affair at Lockwood's Folly Inlet, NC, with the destruction of the Confederate Blockade-runner steamers, Ranger, and the Vesta.

January 11, 1864 - Federal scout to Lexington, TN, with report on Confederate movements.

January 11, 1864 - Federal expedition from Maryville up the Little Tennessee River, TN, to Chilhowee, where the Federals move against a nest of guerrillas comprised of absentees, deserters, paroled soldiers, and Rebel citizens who had been stealing goods from the loyal citizens of Blount and Monroe counties, and taking them to North Carolina to sell them. (Jan 11-12)

January 11, 1865 - - Federal expeditions from Helena, AR, aboard the steamer, Dove, up the Mississippi River to Harbert's Plantation, MS, where the 60th US Colored Infantry surround Mr. Harbert and find him asleep out in his corn crib. Mr. Harbert is in trouble as he is a Negro enlisted Union soldier who decided he had enough of the war and deserted back to his plantation-farm. (Jan 11-13)

January 11, 1865 - Skirmish with guerrillas near Lexington, MO, as the beaten bushwhackers flee towards Greenton.

January 11, 1865 - Federal scout against Navajo Indians from Fort Wingate to Sierra Del Datil and vicinity, the New Mexico Territory. The Yankees find no Indians in the area. (Jan 11-21)

January 11, 1865 - The Federal forces numbering over 580, at Beverly, Randolph County, WV, are captured, by Maj. Gen. Thomas L. Rosser, CSA, in a surprise cavalry raid.

January 11, 1865 - Maj. Gen. George G. Meade, USA, resumed command of the Army of the Potomac, the Richmond, VA, Campaign.

January 11, 1865 - Federal scout from New Creek through Greenland Gap, and through Petersburg to Franklin, WV, for the purpose of surprising any Confederates in the area, which meets with little success. (Jan 11-15)

January 11, 1867 - Kansas ratifies the 14th Amendment

January 11, 1893 - Benjamin F. Butler dies, Washington, D. C.
