Born in the Bronx on July 19, 1879, John Purroy Mitchel lived only a couple of miles from the Bronx’s Woodlawn Cemetery, home to the Mitchel family plot. But while John Purroy Mitchel’s father James had already lost both of his brothers, the plot was oddly empty. This was because one brother, Willie, laid in an unmarked grave alongside his fellow soldiers of the First Virginia Infantry in Gettysburg, while the other, John, rested in Charleston’s Magnolia Cemetery, having fallen in defense of Fort Sumter against a Union artillery barrage.

John Purroy Mitchel, who would, at 34, become the second-youngest Mayor of New York City, grew up hearing his father James’ stories of serving under Confederate General Gordon in the bloodiest battles of the War.

His grandfather John Mitchel was probably the greatest of the Irish Protestants serving the cause of Irish nationalism. He was a contemporary of Thomas Francis Meagher of the Irish Brigade in the Young Ireland movement. In the 1850s he went into exile in the South and became an advocate of Southern rights and ****. During the war he was a pro-Confederate propagandist for the Richmond Enquirer.

By the way, Mitchel Field airfield was named after the mayor, not Billy Mitchell. The airfield is now a college campus and athletic center. It is a mile from my home.

If you wish to talk about a Confederate connection in New York City, checkout the background of the Mayor's residence (Gracie Mansion) and Archibald Gracie III CSA.

Yes Gen. Archibald Gracie was from Mobile, AL. His son Col. Archihbald Gracie IV was a a notable survivor of the Titanic.
He was also an author on the Battle of Chickamauga.
