Liljenquist Family Collection of Civil War Photographs

Something I just noticed about this collection. Every soldier so far who has a sign (like "Jeff Davis and the South), the sign can be read. So not all period photos on metal were mirror images. Some indeed have been reversed to look normal. Okay, it's possible that the signs were printed in reverse.

Alfred Bloon Gives Us Belle Plain, 1864

Belle Plain Landing, view wharf, steamers, barges, camp and general bustle described by Sanitary Commission agent Alfred Bloon, 1864. And also famous for The Punch Bowl, camp holding Confederate prisoners en route elsewhere. Using this image because the reading soldier is so wonderful. Snip...

    Solving Time's Puzzlers, Dating Photographs

It was pretty darn easy tracking down the date of this image. It was helpful ID-ing which of JPK's sisters and the fact this was probably a portrait taken at the time of her marriage. Middle part and hair carefully covering her eras, a micro-mosaic pin and the beginnings of a fashion rage...

Painted Backdrops To The Bloody Backdrop Called War, 1861-1865

One of far too many portraits employing a painted backdrop to keep track of, this one is marvelous. Like most, the slightly primitive quality enhances History IMO. It was an awfully primitive war- as are all wars. OK, after some ( a LOT ) of futile searching, ( and please note it's searching...

Libey & Sons, Ships Chandlers, Richmond Or, Libby , The Most Photographed Prison Of The ACW

Confederate photographer Charles Rees, of ' Little Miss Bonnie Blue ' fame caught an amazing shot of Libby in 1863. You'd be forgiven for not understanding the warehouse's necessary proximity to the river nor for the fact Richmond was thigh deep in war. Well, looking more closely those are not...

Using this iconic photo of Elizabeth and Peter Thorn's home, Gettysburg Gatehouse taken July, 1863. Center of so much of our History, so significant to the battle, forever branded in our collective minds it's one of several nearly sacred spots. Making a point- image belongs to all of us both...

U.S. Grant photo - rare image?

Came across this image on Pinterest, one I've not seen before. Here is some more info on the image: General Ulysses S.
