I prefer notes to be at the bottom of the page - footnotes. When they're stuck in the back of the chapter, or worse, in the back of the book, I hate all that flicking back and forth to check them.
Like many, I prefer footnotes at the bottom of a page, or else I might get too into the story and forget to look them up at the end. I am also not a big fan of Faulkner and Joyce. I like to breather somewhere in the reading. I really like chapters. Stream of consciousness is ok for short periods. Paragraphs are nice too.
