The Battle of Fredricksburg or Marye’s Heights was one of the great victories of Confederate General Robert E. Lee in December, 1862, during the American Civil War. Both sides suffered heavy casualties. It was an enormous military and psychological disaster for the Union cause, leading to the removal of incompetent Major General Ambrose Burnside from command of the Army of the Potomac.
