Hello all, so over the last few months I have gathered a lot of information on my fathers side and thought I would share. Turns out I have 11 Union and 12 Confederate ancestors. Great great great, grandfathers, uncles, cousins. In one family the father and oldest son fought for the 31st Virginia infantry while the youngest son fought for the Union. WOW! what a split! I have also been in the process of gathering Pictures of them, their graves, battle flags, monuments etc. I think I am going to put it all together in one of those "Shutterfly" books. It has been really interesting and thought I would share.

Wow that's a very impressive Civil War ancestry you got there.
Ya, its interesting looking at the family lines, The fathers side Nay's hook up With the Grandmothers side, Rexrode's BUT in small towns in West Virginia I guess the dating pools weren't that large.

West Virginia did not exist before 1864; it was all Virginia. While tracing family genealogy, I came across a saying - "Virginia; 200,000 people and 15 last names."

You are Correct. Hahahaha and that sounds about right!

Awesome stuff! I think too many people forget about the soldiers who were in this terrible war and just concentrate on the sensational side such as Slavery. Finding a split like that is something that is lost on people today. I haven't discovered a split like that in my family, I have found a Join though. My Great Grandfather was the son of a Confederate Private and my Great Grandmother was the daughter of a Union Captain. All together I have only uncovered 14 CSA in the family and 1 USA.

I looked through your list and noticed Rexrode, there is a Rexrode that married into my tree, not in my direct line but a wife of some great uncle which for some reason I couldn't locate at the time I wrote this, my luck. LOL

Wow, your family is more proof that the Civil War did divide families and pit members
against each other. I wonder about the hard feelings among your family members may have
had for each other after the war. My direct ancestors all fought for the Confederacy but I do
have collateral kindred that wore the blue including a distant cousin proven by DNA named
George A. Custer.
