Gouty diathesis
describes the formation of urinary stones in persons with primary gout. These patients may present with other manifestations of gout (eg, gouty arthritis).

You may have already known that Brigadier General Goode Bryan was hospitalized for dysentery; furloughed for illness June 9, 1864; and resigned Sept 20, 1864.

But did you know that his resignation was a result of "gouty diathesis" and "great derangement of the kidneys"?

If you have ever had gout. You would know how he felt. I have had gout on and off for around 10 years. I cannot begin to explain the pain. It is really beyond words, and it is only fairly recently that there have been any effective treatment. I can tell you why he resigned.
