You are Brig. Gen. George Jerrison Stannard, although your name does not appear in any list of doorkeepers of the US House of Representatives, like for example this one:
http://history.house.gov/People/Office/Doorkeepers/
or the list on Wikipedia.
That information from your biography might be fake news. But as everything else fits in the description, so you are my candidate!

From my source:
"Stannard, the first Vermonter to volunteer for service in the Civil War, was appointed lieutenant colonel of the 2nd Vermont Infantry in May 1861.
[...]
At the Battle of First Manassas, the brigade was held back until the closing stages of the contest, when it covered the retreat of the Federal Army.
[...]
Soon after Manassas, Stannard was offered command of the 3rd Vermont Infantry. He humbly declined the position, opting instead to remain with his regiment.

[...]
As the Vermonters began their flanking movement, Maj. Gen. Winfield Hancock rode up to Stannard. He, too, saw the opportunity for a flank assault, but Stannard's men already were in motion when he arrived. Moments later, Hancock was shot in the groin and caught by two of Stannard's staff as he fell from his horse. Stannard used his handkerchief and revolver to make a tourniquet for the stricken general.
[...]
In 1868, Stannard was appointed collector of customs for Vermont. Later he served as a doorkeeper of the U.S. House of Representatives. He died of pneumonia in Washington on June 1, 1886, and was buried in Burlington, Vt., after a tremendous state funeral.

Finally, an easy one. (I don't go on internet searches for these - feels like cheating. Either you know something or you don't. Just me I guess)

Anyway, this is the famous Charles W. Field of Georgia.

Thanks for making me feel smart.

Edit - Field was doorkeeper of the House after the Civil War, but he doesn't match with the other clues given in the question.

i would really aprreciate it if questions were properly asked. he never served as the doorkeeper of the house of representatives but on the staff of walter brownlow preston, james w wintersmith, samuel donaldson and (maybe) charles w field who in turn held that office. even wiki got that right.

if you start here (which i think is the natural choice in this case) you just gOOgle your ears off and get no result - in the end i found him by going through each and every brigadier general present at gettysburg. :cannon:

... nix fia unguat (~ no offence intented)
