Monuments Fight over Forrest Statue not over

I have lost track on this effort to move the statue: is it a logistical problem where it is, or is it part of the larger move to relocate CSA related statues? The article is not really clear on this as it deals more with the legal wrangle. The cost of this undertaking seems like it would be prohibitive.

The absurd Memphis City Council will fail yet again (thankfully), due to under Tennessee State Law, they need permission from the descendants of Forrest to give permission to move the body (which they've already said No), and they'll need the Tennessee Historical Commission to give approval also, which they claimed wasn't going to be done either.

I'm willing to bet the City Council knows this already, but it makes for tv air time & political theater, and not much else more. It's a constant cycle that thankfully so far, has ended with their demise in such fruitless efforts.

This article, in my view, overstates the continuing danger. It's facts are correct, the Tennessee Historical Commission failed to set out rules regarding waivers under the Heritage Protection Act of 2013. They are now making those rules with regard to applications under both the 2013 and the 2016 acts. I believe those rules are going to make it very difficult to get waivers. This will make Memphis' uphill struggle even harder in my view. While the Tennessee Historical Commission could hardly be described as "Confederate friendly," they are heritage protectionists and I don't see them granting such a waiver, simply because the current administration in Memphis wants to turn the focus from its failings to attack General Forrest.

The big problem is that it's also where he and Mary Ann are buried. The original plot they were in doesn't have room for them any longer.

And yes, the costs would be prohibitive... size alone. It is in the center of what was Forrest Park, downtown... Now some generic name like Medical Center Park.

It's sort of a unique problem, different from the run of the mill Confederate statues
without bodies underneath.
