Civil Warscapes shared the Picture in History's photo below. The accompanying story said a Civil War soldier's life was saved by this bible in 1864. The soldier wrote a letter to President Abraham Lincoln explaining what had happened. In return, President Lincoln sent the soldier a replacement bible with his presidential signature. I hope this story is true because I think it is amazing!

A sad letter to Smith's sister, Mrs. EH Brown, of the Central Presbyterian in Richmond. The letter writer has had his Bible destroyed by a bullet and he is asking for a new one:

This letter almost makes my heart break...the value of a Bible to this young man, and the great store he puts by having the one destroyed, replaced. I do hope that his request was answered, and that his hope was not in vain...for the Bible or his life.

That's either a very small bible or a vary large bullet! Either way...miracles, at times, do seem to have been part and parcel of the Civil War. Both sides, claiming the same faith and same God, would have their stories to tell no doubt.
I think it is a pocket bible, the bullet flattened out when it struck the bible which makes it look larger.

It's surprising how many examples one can find about bibles stopping bullets. I hope the story in the OP is true as well and wouldn't surprise me. In WWII soldiers sometimes carried Heart Shield Bibles that were cased in metal just for this potential purpose.

Wow powerful almost takes your breath away... thanks all for sharing! I have always felt "something" when I hold this New Testament and tiny cased figure of the Virgin Mary. The comfort these tiny items gave their owners....... breathtaking. And then to have said items save your life!? Wow!

Small but powerful
They look very old...do they belong to you? Are they artifacts from the War? It is well known that men on both sides of the Civil War relied heavily on their faith for comfort and spiritual sustenance...the carrying of the these Bibles is one indication of that. It went a long way to reassuring them in life, as well as death.

There is something about people shooting at you that brings you closer to the Almighty...It is quite a helpless feeling. :frown:

And most of those bibles were in the soldier's breast pockets, which means the enemy was a pretty good shot! It is often when we are at our most vulnerable that we are closest to the Almighty...just as He, in my opinion, intended.
