You Know You're Preoccupied By The Civil War When;

When you are willing to endure the groans and rolling eyes of your spouse and kids to stop and read every histotical marker on the highway, hoping for some reference to the War.
YES I did this in Texas once. I got 45 out of 47 along the route. I think that one was missing and another was when we were being followed downhill by truck pulling a trailer. I didn't want to abruptly slow down and pull off because of a possible accident.

When you wonder if it's really child abuse, to be stuck in traffic and tell them no, it's FUN to read Mom her Civil War flash cards.

When you bring home 3 bumper stickers from Gettysburg for presents for everyone, for some reason you still have them.

Hehehe. I see I'm also not the only one trying to indoctrinate the next generation.
("Yeah, son, today we'll read the story of Joseph and then from 'the other book'..." [He knows I mean the Golden Book of the Civil War. For vocabulary words. Honest. :whistling:]

I knew I was in deep when at a funeral for my father's boss I stopped myself just in the knick of time from explaining the origin of Taps. It was the 150th anniversary !

Hahahaha, good one Sweet Sue, yes well, have DONE that. The kids just rolled their eyes. It was whispered! Didn't try it on the husband, he'd probably have edged away.

When you're given morphine sulfate for pain and you think: This is so cool! It's the same medicine Civil War veterans would have been given. Now I can see what it feels like and how it works.

Hated to ' like ' that James B , but can see the interest- had it once for something silly ( self inflicted method of meeting the ground at speed ) , did not have that perspective at the time because hadn't read of our veterans yet. Do remember thinking if I went to sleep something just out of eye range was going to get me, think in the UK maybe doses were a little generous.

Hope it works, ( for pain not for nameless ogres ). Nice to have you and all your quiet, good knowledge here.

You drive by a field and can "see" the lines of brave soldiers moving in line and the artillery lined up at the woodline.
And it's not even a Civil War battlefield.

ALL. THE. TIME.

I'll see a clearing and instantly look for the high ground.. my friends get sick of it. It's okay, they just don't get it. This is especially bad if you live in the South in an area that quite possibly could have seen some action.

Same with you, Annie....I am so happy to read every word you write, James! But rest assured---I did the same thing when the hernia....well, herniated and twisted, whatever they call it....and they threw me in the ambulance and drove me 70+ miles to San Angelo (and I happened to have the EMT who didn't believe in morphine!) The entire way, I was thinking "Oh, man, this isn't as bad as what happened to J.E.B. Stuart!" every time we hit a bump--for those who don't know, ambulances don't really have shocks like we think of in our autos, and you can feel every pothole. Every. Single. One.

Naturally, as soon as we got there, they gave me morphine and a doctor walked by and popped it back till my surgery. Probably a good thing, because I'd have backed out if I hadn't spent the night from hell in our ER. :smile:
