Good move. Hopefully the Texas and the remainder of the "museum" artifacts will move with the painting and be merged into the History Center's existing collection.

Is the atlata history center large enough to encompass everything?
The History Center is a complex of buildings with quite a bit of green space available in which to construct a building suited to the Cyclorama. The current building is and has been land-locked for quite some time and has not been large enough to befit all the artifacts in it (since I moved to Atlanta in 1971 anyway).

That sounds good. I haven't been to the Cyclorama since I was probably 7 but it was one of my first introductions to the Civil War. I have been wanting to go back and see it but I think I'll wait now until they make the move. Does the History Center have a lot of Civil War artifacts as well?

I'd like to see Texas moved to the Civil War Railroad Museum at Kennesaw and "reunited" with the General! The museum formerly did little but house the famous locomotive and so it was back in 1989 when I saw it last prior to last year. It's been greatly enlarged in size and though the focus is still on General and The Great Locomotive Chase ( which began in Kennesaw when it was still called Big Shanty ) they manage there to tell the entire story of Civil War railroading. Below, the General in all its restored glory:

This is the original gallery which houses General; it's now only a portion of the entire museum.

That brings back a memory or two. When I saw it the paint was barely dry. It's amazing it still exists. I hope they can do it justice at the new digs.

You know I didn't even think about the Texas.

That's probably because it's been "treated like a stepchild" in the renovation of the Cyclorama building. It was formerly stuck in the basement where I saw it dusty and neglected back in 1964, but at least then you could stand back and see all of it! The renovation moved the main entrance from the second level, reached logically up the grand outside stairway, to what looks like a "servant's entrance" on the ground floor, formerly the basement. Texas was virtually encased by support columns making photographing a challenge:

There's not enough room inside the Railroad Museum for both, so the History Center is a great alternative. In addition, the two sites are not that far apart (at least during non-rush hour).

I was at the History Center this weekend and the Cyclorama last month. I think this is a great move.

"As big as the Cyclorama is, it will get bigger, returning to its original dimensions as sections that were removed when it took up residence in Grant Park will be re-created as part of the restoration. That includes one panel, 6 feet wide by 50 feet high, depicting part of the battle. Also, 8 feet of sky will be re-created from photographs and added back to the top of the painting, running all the way around its 371-foot circumference. "

I think West Paces Ferry would be a better safer location anyway.

I concur but visitors better hope they don't encounter a crash on this road.

* This center opens at 1000 hours, not 0900 hours. We found out the hard way and missed this gem.
