"Probably in late summer, he encountered on a street corner an old subordinate he had not seen in years, Raleigh R. White, one time lieutenant colonel of the Fourteenth Tennessee Cavalry. The two greeted each other warmly, and Forrest asked White what he had been doing for a vocation in the postbellum years.

"Preaching the Gospel of the Son of God, White stoutly replied. "What!" Forrest said in surprise. "I thought you were in South America or Europe. Tell me about yourself and your work." Years earlier, another officer-minister who served under him had met him in Memphis and reminded him of a war promise he had made to become a Christian when peace came. That time, his eyes flashing toward the uniforms of Federal occupation troops around them, he had growled a reply to the effect that there was too much un-Christian work still to do.

This time he asked White to pray for him. The two stepped out of the street into a corner of the parlor of a bank and got on their knees. There White helped him perform for himself a rite that for five decades he had left mostly to his family’s women.

Forrest became a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian denomination.

Rev Raleigh White was a Lt Col of the 14th Tennessee under Forrest, and had been promoted on his recommendation. After the war he started to be a doctor but was called to the ministry. He was a Baptist traveling preacher, and in the 1880s moved to Texas. His son became a well known surgeon there and helped found a hospital still operating today. Forrest had good reason to be surprised at White's conversion - he had been, during the war, a profane soldier who could out-cuss Forrest, and a hard living one, too. Forrest thought if this man could be saved, then there was hope for him!

Rev White stuck in my head because he was a Baptist circuit riding revivalist preacher like my great-uncle - in Texas, too! The reverend was a hellfire and brimstone, pulpit pounding blue light, too, and when he bumped into Forrest he was filled with the spirit - and not the ones he'd been known to be filled with during the war. Forrest didn't have a chance! He had been going to the various health springs around Tennessee and Kentucky - had gone and stayed with John Wilder at his spa for a while - and nothing seemed to be helping for very long. This meeting got him to church - finally - with his wife, something that made her overjoyed. That's where he heard the sermon that finished the job. He wanted to know more so he sorta kinda kidnapped the minister - he was a guest of the Forrests for three days, expounding the Word to the general!
