I'd say he was an earnest looking young man. Like so many thousands of others, he was mortally wounded. What a shame. But, that's our history.

The Official Losses for the 14th Virginia are very high, many men say the battle of Drewry's Bluff was the most murderous fire since Gettysburg. Some claim the Bermuda Hundred Campaign was "worse" than Gettysburg.
The 14th Virginia lost as many if not more at the Battle of Chester Station on May 10th 1864... as they did at Picketts Charge at Gettysburg..... Then took heavy losses again on May 16th at Drewrys Bluff....
Such soulful eyes.
Do you know if any of his brothers survived the war?James Wilson was from Mecklenburg County, Virginia. He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Drewry's Bluff on May 17, 1864. He died May 28, 1864. He served alongside my relatives in the 14th Virginia. He had several brothers who enlisted with him.
