Golden Thread Generals At A Younger Age

The pictures of Robert E. Lee show clearly that growing older sometimes adds to the good looks. He was very handsome in his youth (in fact he was said to be the best looking officer in the army) not quite so in his 40's, but nothing beats his appearance during and after the war. As somebody already stated: regal!
Also Grant looked definiely more dignified later in life.
Sherman ... well ... looked like Sherman and the first photo of Jackson let me understand why his first nickname was “Blue lights“. Anna Morrison Jackson must have been a very courageous lady to stand the look of these piercing eyes.
Great thread, great photos, thanks for sharing!

Colonel Ulysses S. Grant, October 1861 in Cairo, Illinois.

This picture is a "cut and paste" -- which they sometimes did back then. Grant never had that "second" beard.

Here's my favorite "young Ulysses" photo -- taken at the time of his marriage, which was in 1848:

And isn't it a nice thought that even cross-eyed girls who are not exactly a "belle" can conquer the heart of such a handsome young man!?!
(Although I still like him better when he was grown up ... )
