Surprise! This is a four-host effort by myself, diane, Dixie Rifles (our Ft. Pillow house expert) and 7th Mississippi Infantry. Please enjoy the plethora of Forrest threads already available and feel free to start new ones. Since I've been on the forum, many have remarked that he's one of the most frequent topics (good and bad)....thus the nickname "That Guy"!

We encourage you to read what's already in existence and to add to the research and commentary on a very controversial figure. As always, this forum is closely monitored and rules of CivilWarTalk apply most stringently.

Have fun!

Union Colonel Abel Streight begins a raid into northern Alabama and Georgia with the goal of cutting the Western and Atlantic Railroad between Chattanooga, Tennessee and Atlanta. The raid ended when Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest captured Streight's entire command near Rome, Georgia.
The plan called for Streight and General Greenville Dodge to move from central Tennessee into northwestern Alabama. Dodge would lead a diversionary attack on Tuscumbia, Alabama, while Streight would take nearly 2,000 troopers across northern Alabama and into Georgia. Streight outfitted his men with mules instead of horses, as he felt they were better adapted to the rugged terrain of the southern Appalachians. The expedition ran into trouble almost immediately when the mules arrived at Nashville in poor condition. A Confederate cavalry detachment swooped in and caused the mules to stampede, and it took two days to round them up.

This is a happy day for Forrest - I'm very pleased to see this forum kicked off so nicely! I'd whack a bottle of champagne over the hull but the Old Rebel didn't drink! I'll settle for another celebration. Somebody just now brought me my first genuine Forrest portrait - they found it hanging around the hospice thrift shop. Nobody knew anything about it so my buddy got it for a few bucks. (He doesn't know Forrest from forest - just thought 'civil war = my pal downriver'.) It is a lithograph, signed by the artist, genuine article - can't believe this! This is the one:

Thanks, chellers. We wanted to see it done right and be a credit to CWT--definitely not a "shrine" and not a place for garbage. Just the facts.

What a great day for you, diane!

As a person who is ignorant about Nathan B Forrest, can someone enlighten me as to a decent book about him. I do not believe he is the devil incarnate or some kind of 19th century God so hagiography and trashing volumes please warn me off them.

Jack Hurst. I think it's as honest as it gets. He dogs on him when he deserves it...and doesn't when it's not necessary.

I also highly recommend Bearss' book on Brice's Crossroads. Although not strictly about Forrest, it contains a lot of good research.

Edit: There are some threads on just this topic in the new forum. Enjoy!
