USS Massachusetts gets turned away in a duel with a battery on Ship Island manned by CS Marines and sailors.

Found out recently my G G grandfather was a fireman on the USS Massachusetts - I've found out quite a lot about it, but if you have any more info on that ship and the action it saw, I'd be grateful!

A (Mostly) Complete Civil War Naval Bibliography (I of VI)

While I have tried to be complete, I had to draw the line in some places as to what was a "book" and what was an "article," and in general articles in other publications are not included in this listing. And I'm sure I missed a few, and will update to include those as necessary. The next stage (when I get to it) will be to key the titles by subject area, but I wanted to go ahead and put this out there as it stands... this list includes histories of the naval side of the war, biographies of important individuals connected with it, closely-associated land campaigns, and other allied subjects, including items about the antebellum Navy and the diplomatic side of the Civil War (which is strongly linked with the naval side).

(I should also note that listing does not imply approval. I have my undoubted favorites among this list, but there are also some real turkeys. Books that I've read and can especially recommend are marked with a thumbs-up; I tried to limit to 100 but couldn't quite get it down that far... so it's more like the "top 150 or so." For good reference works, I gave a ":geek:".)

I must stress here that, just because an item is not marked with a "", that shouldn't be taken to mean that it isn't recommended. Those so marked are particularly recommended. (For instance, I've yet to read a book by R. Thomas Campbell that I haven't liked, but some of his are more significant than others, or cover a particular topic area; others, like Mark Twain's Life on the Mississippi, are wonderful books but may be only tangentially related to Civil War naval history.) (And some of them I simply haven't gotten to yet...)

Nearly all of us visit Civil War battlefields, but we don't see ships from that era much. I've only been on two, both age of sail holdovers. I've never seen an ironclad. Any good list of ships or recreations of parts of ships that we could visit. Also, are there preserved sites of shipyards, docks, etc?

Since many of us played on artillery as kids or "enlisted" in the army at kids programs at battlefields or reenactments, a lot of us had substantial childhood fantasies based on "play." That carries over into adult life.

The most-complete Civil War ironclad on display is the USS Cairo, inside Vicksburg National Military Park.

There is a partial full-scale replica of Cairo in the Mississippi River Museum at Mud Island, Memphis.

There is a full-scale replica of the USS Monitor at the Mariner's Museum at Newport News, Virginia, where the turret and other major components raised from the Monitor are also being conserved.

The hull of CSS Neuse is on display at Kinston NC; there is also a replica Neuse in town.

The hull of CSS Jackson is on display at "Port Columbus," the former Confederate Naval Museum, at Columbus, Georgia; there are also simulated/replica ships there.

The USS Constellation at Baltimore is a Civil War era sailing sloop.

Across the pond, the HMS Warrior is preserved and on display.

(Top of my head. Details, etc., to follow.)

Great list. I should have seen the Cairo when I was in Memphis.

I need to rescan this at a better resolution, but... here's a snapshot from inside the Memphis mock-up:

Contrast with approximately the same angle in the genuine article:

The thing that struck me is , how similar to the gundeck of Victory that is, bearing in mind of course that the complete equipment is not present on Cairo.

Thank you for an excellent and informative post. One of my ancestors's served on the CSS Tallahassee and I'd love to become more knowledgeable about CSA navy operations. Thanks again!

Probably the best single-volume work out there right now on the naval war is James M. McPherson's War on the Waters; it's a good introduction to the naval side of the war, and is recent enough that it should be in most libraries. Other, older one-volume histories, which are also worth it but might not be as easy to find unless you're going to buy them, are:

Bern Anderson's By Sea and By River
William M. Fowler's Under Two Flags
Ivan Musicant's Divided Waters
Spencer Tucker's Short History of the Civil War at Sea, and the same author's Blue & Gray Navies

All of these should provide a good introduction to the topic. I would steer clear of the 19th-century ones (thinking particularly of David D. Porter's Naval History of the Civil War here) until you have a grounding in more recently-written history (as history written by participants and history written by strong partisans will distort the view a bit-- and Porter falls into both categories).
