Grant Grant had nothing to do with the Union winning the war

Well, it seems there is a need for a summary -- General U. S. Grant, being a part of the Union Army and that Army be it a part or as a whole, did win the war and being a part of that whole, is a fact. That fact holds true for every soldier, sailor, Marine that served in the Union Forces be it 'Regulars' or 'Volunteers.'

This thread has had an extended shelf life due to hijacking the original topic.

Just my opinions.

That's to be expected after 33 pages of proving that Grant was instrumental in the Union victory. It got derailed because of the members against Grant not being able to prove that he wasn't. So now it's moved on to Sherman the "virulent racist". If you can't prove one point, deflect it on to another. Classic Lost Cause modus operandi.

I mentioned Sherman because he assessed the situation correctly BEFORE the war began. I don't think he had a crystal ball. He was just using common sense, which the South apparently lacked. Since the greater assets of the North over the South were obvious from the start, the calamities of the war S.D. Lee wrote about AFTER the fact could have been avoided. The lesson being: Don't start a war you don't have a chance in hell of winning! No use in whining about what had been a predictable outcome 150 years later. It's pointless and, frankly, I've grown impatient with this line of argument being peddled as legitimate by Lost Causers.

Thanks for replying. Ok, so it's not what is said but who is saying it? If Sherman says it, it's prescient and intelligent. If S.D. Lee or some other southerner says it, it's "whining" and "peddling" of a bogus idea? Even if its the same as what Sherman said? (And I won't follow up any further on this line, as it is very tangential to the OP.)

Not the same as Sherman said it prior to the war and S. D. Lee said it after the war using hindsight. As Diana tried to explain, there's a big difference.

I think you missed my point. Sherman said what he said BEFORE the war, he said "Don't Do It! You Will Fail!" for all the reasons that came to bear exactly as he predicted, while S.D. Lee said it AFTER the war. The former is a forewarning of what would happen, the latter is whining about the fact that it did happen just as Sherman said it would, and then trying to blame northern superior forces for the calamities that befell the south, rather than admitting that starting a war with the north was a fool's errand from the getgo.

THIS THREAD WILL BE PLACED IN MODERATED THREADS. SEEMS THAT IT IS CLEAR THAT SOME ARE NOT STICKING TO THE ORIGINAL TOPIC ON GRANT AND HIJACKING IT TAKING IT CLEARLY INTO ANOTHER TOPIC ENTIRELY.
