He's the only guy known to have seen Stonewall Jackson drunk as a lord! (Said he was a great bare foot dancer...) That's quite a distinction. And...his clothes got thieved just before Appomattox. He was running around in only his boots and an overcoat because that's all he had.

I didn't know Wilcox was almost nekkid at Appomattox.

Lol! That was when the Union broke through Lee's lines and he had to vacate the Turnbull house. All his generals showed up for a hasty conference and A P Hill had to ask Wilcox why he was wearing a hot overcoat. He opened it up and said that's all he had as the Yankees had swiped the rest! Hill said to keep it on then... Don't know if he rounded up some duds before Appomattox but I'll bet he did!

Diane -

I would love to include that in the little bio I usually write to go along with my images. Can you let me know a source for that story? I did a search for him, but could not find any reference for his clothes being stolen.

Thanks,

David

It's to be found in From Blue to Gray: The Life of Confederate General Cadmus M Wilcox by Gerard A Patterson.

And I'm darned glad you asked! It was Gibbons, not Hill, who asked Wilcox about his coat! And he asked at Appomattox. He asked about the coat on a nice spring day and Wilcox showed him he was pretty much alone in that coat. Wilcox said to Phil Sheridan, who was standing around, "You have captured all the balance, and you can't have that until you capture me!"

Ah, me. Old age. Now I must check everything I post! :smoke:
