SENTINEL & ENTERPRISE/ JOHN LOVE One of the monuments in Monument Park in Fitchburg was vandalized and Parks Department works tried to clean it up on Tuesday morning. Arthur Guy with the City's Parks Department works hard to get it off the monument. (John Love)

FITCHBURG -- Vandals spray painted graffiti all over each side of the Civil War monument in Monument Park on Main Street over the course of Monday night.
Department of Public Works Commissioner Lenny Laakso said the graffiti was discovered by Parks Department employees Tuesday morning and promptly reported it to police.
Employees promptly began using a baking soda blaster to remove the paint, followed by graffiti removing chemicals, and the process will likely have to be repeated multiple times to completely remove the traces of paint, he said.
Laakso said the vandals also completely destroyed a tree that had recently been donated and planted at the park.
Stephen Twining, New England graves registration officer for the Sons of Union Civil War Veterans and a member of the Fitchburg Veterans Council, the group that cares for Monument Park through the city's Adopt-a-Park program, called the vandalism "disrespectful" to about 140 soldiers who gave their lives in the war.

Some people these days have no respect for the soldiers who fought during the Civil War - it makes me sick.

It is doubtful that vandals like these people have much respect for anything including themselves.

“To the Confederate soldiers of Scotland County, the record of whose sublime self-sacrifice and undying devotion to duty in the service of their country is a fond heritage of a loyal posterity”.
Inscribed on the front of the Confederate soldier’s monument in Laurinburg, North Carolina.

Not again!!!!!!????!!!!!!!!!!!! :furious:

Don't care what side of the Civil War--all memorials are American Memorials....they shouldn't be tampered with period.

Just my opinion.
