While I can't answer your question, you've come to the right place.
Paging @Lanyard Puller ... if he can't tell you more, then nobody can. It's worth considerably more than $15, undoubtedly.
Just a reminder that PM's are not allowed in the Weapons & Ammo forum.PM incoming
Can you post any additional markings on the stock or metal components, such as the lockplate?
No rifling in the barrel. It appears to have been a smooth bore to start with.I'd like to know if the barrel is rifled. If so it might be traced back to the 1st SC infantry, as noted above may be a Palmetto and it's possible it made a trip to Southern PA.
Do need to see the lock plate as well.
Easily a $10,000 piece if so.
I agree with you on this, I beleive I see it as well. Here is a photo of the lock plate and the bayonet that was with it. There are no marks on the stock at all. I sure do appreciate the input.

Just my 2 cents, but after enlarging it, it almost looks like a faint Clover. Could it be possibly from the Irish Brigade?I believe I can make out the tree trunk to the right of the hammer and the SC under tree. Enlarge and compare to attached photo
