After the self-inflicted torture hike, @bdtex and @Kathy the history sleuth went with us back to the Antietam (or Sharpsburg  ) battlefield. I already posted some of the pictures. Here are a few more from this afternoon

And of course before we left, we had to walk the cornfield where Hoods Texas brigade, commanded by Col William Tatum Wofford (18th GA) fought with so much grit and determination. And it was super special to be able to walk it with my favorite Texan @bdtex

This was my 5th CWT muster. Last night at dinner @NH Civil War Gal said, "There's just something special about these CWT musters....You make friends that last a lifetime." It was a fantastic event and I can't thank @NH Civil War Gal enough for all the hard work she invested to make it such a success. And to the entire team @Stone in the wall James N. Thank you all for such a special time with CWT friends!

After the visit to the museum, some of us headed back to Crampton's Gap to mark something off my BUCKET LIST.

We had visited on Thursday with the group but didn't hike the newly interpreted trail down into Whipp's ravine. Maryland State Park Ranger Steve Robertson was kind enough to meet us back there today so those who wished to engage in self-inflicted torture  could make the hike. Its soooo steep - right down into the bowels of Crampton's Gap.

Below is right about where the 16th Georgia tried to form a line of battle before being over run by the New Jersey brigade commanded by Torbert and Bartlett's New York brigade.

Cobbs Legion and the 16th Georgia were rolled up and routed from this location shortly after coming into position.

This interpretive marker below shows Abner Monroe Reynolds Captain of Company B, 16th Georgia who was killed at Crampton's Gap on September 14, 1862.

The Heck Brothers fought at South Mtn

One brother fought for the Union and one fought for the Confederates. One snuck through lines to have breakfast with his family where his Mother made a fine breakfast and afterward snuck back to his own line.

This carving represents that meeting between the brothers. Source; Curator

I just got a wonderful email this evening from the Bast Museum. Miss Any thought our group was wonderful, fun, and generous! We all made such a great impression on them that she wants me to keep in touch with them! Thank you all for your generous donations to that museum!!!

And I also want to thank Clark for being my eyes down in Maryland, Laura for taking and posting such wonderful pictures because I was way too busy to post anything, and Richard @ucvrelics for guiding me behind the scenes on how to do this. None of this would have been possible with out Richard’s help guiding me on what to do next!

Really enjoyed going back to the battlefield this afternoon with @lelliott19 , @Rocky18 and @Kathy the history sleuth . The weather and company were very pleasant and the crowd had thinned out. Didn't take a lot of pictures today. Mostly walked and experienced the feel. The Georgia Monument at The Cornfield. I like the inscription.
