Reading Craig Symonds' Stonewall of the West, he claims Cleburne was in defacto command on the battlefield at Richmond, August 29th and 30th of 1862. However, I've heard in another thread attributing the battle's results to Kirby Smith. I will admit, I need to get some books on the Heartland Offensive. But anyways: was Kirby Smith commanding in the field at Richmond, or was Cleburne handling everything?

In his master thesis "Cleburne and the tactical employment of his division at Chickamauga", Maj. Joseph M. Lance III presented briefly the history of Cleburne's command before Chickamauga. At Richmond, the author explains that Cleburne acted as Kirby Smith's vanguard and posted his division in the evening of August 29, 1862, linking with John S. Scott's cavalry command. Cleburne initiated the attack against Manson, was wounded and relinquished command after beginning to envelop Union troops. Kirby Smith arrived some times later and finished the movement Cleburne had begun. Smith also used his cavalry to cut the Union supply line, resulting in an impressive victory (Union = 206 KIA / 844 WIA / 4,303 POW versus Confederacy = 78 KIA / 372 WIA / 1 MIA).

Given this situation, I reasonnably think that Cleburne was the real victor at Richmond, but Smith shared the glory by completing the plan of his subordinate and cutting Union supply line with his cavalry. Cleburne assumed tactical command from the evening of August 29 until being wounded, then command passed to his senior subordinate before Smith took over some times later when he arrived on the battefield. Orders for enveloping Union troops were issued by Cleburne, therefore he was the key commander during the battle.

Try Battle of Richmond KY by Kenneth Hafendorfer. Picked it up last week at the battlefield gift shop.
Kirby Smith was in overall command- with Cleburne doing the heavy lifting (until wounded in the mouth).
